🇦🇶 Happy Midwinter to everyone who spent or spending this special day in Antarctica!
June 21 marks the shortest day and longest night in the Southern Hemisphere. Near Ukraine’s Vernadsky station, daylight lasts less than 3 hours and 24 minutes — and from now on, the Sun slowly begins its return. 🌑☀️
A cherished Midwinter tradition is exchanging greetings among Antarctic stations. Our team has already received cards from British, American, Australian, Franco-Italian, Japanese, Indian and many other colleagues, and sent warm wishes in return:
💌 “May the returning Sun bring hope, strength and inspiration to all who winter in Antarctica.”
We are proud that for more than 30 years, despite economic challenges, COVID-19 and Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian polar researchers have continuously carried out science at Vernadsky base.
To all members of Antarctic expeditions around the world: thank you for your dedication, courage and perseverance. Your work helps humanity better understand and protect our planet and its fragile ecosystems.
