This is a complete misquote, and a misunderstanding of what the Infinity programme is actually trying to do. It isn’t about taking on IMAX. Quite the opposite: IMAX already sits within its own long-established QC structure and quality standards, built under the late David Keighley and his wife Patricia Keighley.
What Infinity is really trying to address is the Wild West everywhere else — the inconsistencies, the corner-cutting, and the increasingly nonsensical range of so-called “premium formats” in which films are now being shown.
“Premium format” has become an arbitrary marketing label, casually thrown around and regularly abused, to the point where it barely means anything at all anymore.

My biggest concern with INFINITY VISION is Disney telling exhibitors, “Well, we certified your theater, so give us the Dolby/IMAX/RPX screens or we won’t give you our movie.” You’d hate to see it.

It’s not a new format at all. Infinity Vision is a certification for theaters that already have Premium Large Format screens. Disney’s saying, “watch this version for the best experience.”

Just announced at #CinemaCon: Infinity Vision — A new certification for premium large format theaters designed to signify to audiences the biggest, brightest, and most immersive cinematic experiences. Infinity Vision sets a new benchmark for theatrical presentation, certifying auditoriums that meet rigorous technical standards, including a focus on: •The largest screens for maximum scale •Laser projection for superior brightness and clarity •Premium audio formats for fully immersive sound Beginning with the September 25 re-release of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame and followed by the December 18 release of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, audiences will be able to seek out Infinity Vision-certified screens and see the film on the grandest possible scale.

If Disney's INFINITY VISION initiative helps cut through the noise of Premium Large Formats to identify where movies can be seen in the "best possible quality," then I'm not totally against it. But I hope this helps exhibition at large, and not just Disney.

@matthewstoller @BlackMajikMan90 How? If anything its the easiest thing to believe about the merger, warner is now pushing nearly 20 movies a year and paramount already has a bunch of films slated for next year. I wouldn't be surprised if they somehow put out 45 films in one year as a joint company

I think releasing Fantastic Four so close to Superman was a mistake.

And for Marvel their big thing is needing a win with the fans. Even if it made $5 billion, that’s not promising Secret Wars will be as successful.

Disney should be legit afraid of Dune 3 opening vs Avengers, the footage shown today was beyond excellent and the star power (Zendaya, Timmy) feels so much fresher than Marvel’s cast, which feels like *they* need a hit as badly as Marvel.

Disney has invested so much money into Doomsday that is needs to be basically one of the highest grossing movies of all time.
If Dune Part 3 does eat into its box office, that could really hurt it.

@MattBelloni The gap in appeal though is still too wide. If Dune 3 does 2x what Dune 2 did and Doomsday does 1/2 what Endgame did, they basically tie. Both of those won’t happen.
