No matter the season, I’ve never met a tree I didn’t love. There’s something grounding about standing among them, quiet strength, resilience, life stretching skyward. Today on International Day of Forests, it’s worth remembering that forests are more than just beautiful backdrops… they are some of our planet’s most vital ecosystems. They regulate our climate.
They sustain communities.
They shelter an extraordinary range of biodiversity. Forests also provide income and jobs for over 1.6 billion people worldwide, supplying essential raw materials that so many livelihoods depend on. And as our world faces increasing environmental challenges, their importance has never been clearer. Sustainability isn’t optional -it’s crucial. Forests don’t ask for much, but they give us everything. Today, take a moment. Step outside. Look up.
Because protecting forests isn’t just about saving trees… it’s about protecting our future. #LoveNature #Trees

This is amazing! For the first time in more than four decades, rhinos have returned to Uganda's Kidepo Valley National Park, where poachers once wiped them out for their horns and meat. On Tuesday, two southern white rhinos became the first of eight animals intended to re-establish a population in the park. The last rhino there was killed in 1983.

"But it highlighted how life evaluations among under 25-year-olds in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have dropped significantly over the past decade, and suggested that long hours spent scrolling through social media is a key factor in that trend."

“It bears repeating: with such dismal results, it is no wonder the OSSTF wants to abolish EQAO. What would it have the government do instead? Increase spending and reduce class sizes. In other words, hire more teachers, which — by coincidence, surely! — is also what would most increase the OSSTF’s budget and power by increasing the number of people forced to pay its dues.”

Math education in Ontario is scandalously bad. PISA tests suggest Grade 10 students in 2022 are ~ at Grade 8 levels from 2003. EQAO shows 42% of Grade 9 students don't meet standards. Teachers' union solution: scrap EQAO. The union should be ignored financialpost.com/opinion/matthe…

We have a duty to look at the influence of digital and how it can impact our children’s future. “John Jerrim, a UCL-based educational researcher, conducted an experiment where 3,000 pupils took PISA tests in maths, science and reading. Over three months, half the group did all their work on paper and half on a computer. At the end, the paper-based group scored 20 points higher than the one working on screens – the equivalent of half a year’s extra schooling”

Why I #loveNature This is a male Anna's Hummingbird and that flash of colour you’re seeing isn’t just pigment… it’s physics. With the slightest turn of his head, the tiny feathers on his throat ,called a gorget , erupt in brilliant reds and rainbows. The colour comes from microscopic structures in the feathers that reflect light, much like sunlight shimmering on oil on water. These beautiful birds are native the Pacific Coast. (From British Columbia, through Washington, Oregon, California) Sometimes the most incredible things are hidden in the smallest moments. Nature so much to love so much to learn. #wow Source: Nature Unedited

Your Sunday wow! Back in 2017, Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa stunned the surfing world after riding an 80-foot monster wave at Nazaré, Portugal. Those waves roll in thanks to the deep underwater canyon just offshore, creating some of the biggest surf on the planet. But here’s the wild part… officials at the World Surf League are now reviewing Koxa's latest ride from this past December that may have been even bigger - an estimated 95 feet! Additional details coming soon. Happy Sunday.

We just had two days of nearly 20°C… so why is there still white stuff on the lawn? You very likely have seen it too. This is snow mould, a lawn fungus that appears as the snow melts and the ground stays soggy. And FYI, if you struggle with spring allergies, this can also trigger some symptoms. The good news? Most lawns bounce back once warmer, drier weather settles in. #Countdowntospri

Why do rodents gnaw on everything? Turns out… it feels good. New research published in Neuron shows that gnawing isn’t just about keeping those ever-growing front teeth in check. Scientists discovered that the act of gnawing actually activates the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine, the same “feel-good” chemical tied to motivation and pleasure. Researchers traced nerve signals from the teeth to the brain and found that touch-sensitive neurons in the teeth connect directly to dopamine circuits. “When gnawing happens, it has this positive reward… and it keeps going.” says neuroscientist Joshua Emrick The discovery may also help explain other repetitive behaviors across species like dogs chewing bones or even humans biting their nails. #Nature #Discovery #Science
