Because FSD was trained on public real world data it included some driver habits which were undesirable. Thats why it always feels it's almost there, the long tail of the last 2-3% is hard to close & no measurable way to correct this behavior. Back to HD mapping and retraining.

Essentially there are no shortcuts with performing safety case. The customers will eventually demand evidence on Safety of AI driver irrespective of sensor suite or Advanced AI tools. $AUR Aurora with ARM at 100% is here, peers pursuing catchup have atleast a year of work left.

In $kdk earnings call management cited they were able to accelerate kodiak driver development due advancement in New AI tools released last year. Aurora has stated the long development time is a must to undertake 4.5 million safety tests to have conviction on AI behavior. $AUR

Yes, NHTSA has authority under the Safety Act to issue FMVSS mandating minimum sensor types (e.g., LIDAR) for ADS vehicles if they deem it necessary for safety. They've chosen performance-based rules instead—vehicles must achieve safe detection/response outcomes, tech-agnostic. No current or planned LIDAR requirement. Given the forum's innovation focus and admin push to cut barriers for robotaxis, prescriptive hardware rules aren't expected.

It looks like Aurora is fortifying its second-generation kit right before launching its new fleet of trucks with International. Moat fully protected just ahead of the real scale-up in autonomous trucking.

Truck hauling 80,000 lb. at 60 miles/hr would need large perception range to detect & take actions than a robotaxi. FirstLight Lidar can see 1km ahead; doing trucking first solves hardest task; Moving to smaller vehicles will be eaiser because of less harsher demands. $AUR

@AdamBanton @aurora_inno Yes, 20 truck are on road at moment all have observer in them, they don't drive the truck. If the lane is under development there will driver actively monitoring the truck. By Q2 2026 trucks will start having no drivers inside. 200 driverless trucks by end of 2026. $AUR

$AUR At the Morgan Stanley conference today, the CEO of Aurora Innovation explained very clearly why HD maps are key to their system: Urmson defends HD maps as “the right answer.” “Computers are really good at storing and remembering information. We should take advantage of that.” “It seems pretty obvious that being able to know what’s coming in the future rather than having to figure it out instantly is the right answer… Turns out we’ve been able to do that, and our ability to build maps is now really an operational problem. It’s not a technology problem.” Urmson sees this as a massive competitive advantage: a “cached model” of the world that enables predictive decisions, not just reactive ones. While other companies are betting on lightweight mapping approaches or almost map-less systems, relying mostly on real-time perception, many people in the market believe that “no maps” is more advanced, more flexible, and represents the future. In reality, this is not a weakness at all, it is a complete strength. They leverage the advantages of HD maps together with the benefits of a predictive AI system to minimize risks as much as possible, while building a safe and versatile system that could eventually be applied to many other domains where autonomous systems will be useful.
