'ONE NATIONAL POLICY': The White House is urging Congress to pass a “commonsense” national AI standard this year, aiming to prevent a confusing 50-state patchwork of laws while stopping censorship and protecting free speech. The Trump administration says the plan will secure U.S. dominance in AI and strengthen protections for children online.

"The Administration recognizes that some Americans feel uncertain about how this transformative technology will affect issues they care about, like their children’s wellbeing or their monthly electricity bill. These issues, along with other emerging AI policy considerations, require strong Federal leadership to ensure the public’s trust in how AI is developed and used in their daily lives."

In December, President Trump signed an Executive Order tasking us with the development of a national framework for AI, what he called “One Rulebook.” This was in response to a growing patchwork of 50 different state regulatory regimes that threaten to stifle innovation and jeopardize America’s lead in the AI race. Today we are releasing that framework. It will help parents safeguard their children from online harm, shield communities from higher electric bills, protect our First Amendment rights from AI censorship, and ensure that all Americans benefit from this transformative technology. I’m extremely honored to be nominated by President Trump to serve as Director of the National Science Foundation.   Heroic scientists have always challenged consensus to advance the frontiers of knowledge. Recently, many institutions have weakened academic freedom and lost the trust they once enjoyed. Yet across our country, a new golden age of discovery is dawning. Information is open source and debate is public.   The marketplace of ideas is not an efficient market. Finding and funding independent thinkers and builders has taught me to eliminate bottlenecks and favor rigorous science that replicates.  Private funders are developing frontier models and useful technology. Government should take bigger financial risks to pose and answer deeper questions.   NSF’s scientists and staff have built something worth strengthening. Working together, scientists, engineers, investors, research institutions, and businesses can support American genius, enhance national security, enrich our economy, and improve our quality of life.   Entropy is on the march and China is not waiting.

.@POTUS is ensuring that data centers address affordability and benefit ALL American households and businesses. With the Ratepayer Protection Pledge, AI companies will invest in and hire from local communities to build and operate data centers. They will also contribute to the overall resilience of the grid, helping prevent blackouts and power shortages during emergencies.

The Ratepayer Protection Pledge calls on AI companies to BUILD, BRING, or BUY their own power, pay their own way for grid upgrades, and  pay whether they use the power or not. This means data centers will be energy self-sufficient, Americans will be protected from higher electricity bills, and the grid will be modernized for the long run.

Under @POTUS leadership, the biggest AI companies in the world are committing to the Ratepayer Protection Pledge. Data centers are the foundation of the internet and next generation technologies, supporting the U.S. economy and national security. Although electricity demand is increasing, Americans won’t be footing the bill. President Trump is leveraging the data center boom to benefit American households, businesses, and the energy grid at large.
