ChatGPT is not AGI and may not be in the future, either! ChatGPT is a gloried next-word predictor. It tends to memorize the content it is trained on and can easily be fooled with some prompting. Yes, it can be prompted to mimic reasoning and cognition and that is pretty delightful! However, while interesting, we are nowhere near AGI today! It’s still years away!! Yet, several people seem to think we either already have AGI and/or it's around the corner. No, we don't already have AGI - if we did, AI would be far more idiot-proof than it is. There are also a lot of rumors and conspiracy theories about impending AGI, which are simply not true. Keep in mind that GPT-4 was trained 18 months ago. We are yet to see 4.5, let alone AGI!! There is a lot of evidence that LLMs while being pretty useful, will soon hit a wall, and we will need more significant breakthroughs to get to true AGI. For now, it makes sense to be hopeful about 2024 and hope for several GPT 4.0 class models and a few 4.5 - 5.0 class models. Anyone who claims that they can predict what will happen beyond the next 12-18 months is just making it up.
