I agree with the last statement by CP Olorundare Jimoh
“You will come with a lot of things that should be your own lapses and dump it on the police.”
Many of the challenges the Nigerian Police face today can indeed be traced to public lapses and personal responsibilities that could have been avoided. Too often, people refuse to take responsibility for situations created by their own actions and instead look for authorities to blame.
This is not to excuse incompetence where it exists within the police force accountability must apply to everyone. However, security of lives, property, and public safety is a collective responsibility, not the government’s duty alone.
Citizens must be more civic minded. When you notice suspicious activities or emerging security threats in your community, report them promptly. Even if you feel nothing immediate will be done, make the report and obtain a reference number. At least you have fulfilled your responsibility as a citizen. Crime should not be allowed to grow unchecked in our neighbourhoods only for the police to be blamed when it becomes a full blown problem.
We must also stop shielding wrongdoing because of personal benefit. Covering up crime today may eventually bring consequences not only to individuals but to society as a whole.
At the same time, the police must improve confidentiality and trust in handling information provided by the public. Informants and complainants should never be exposed or placed at risk. One key difference between effective policing abroad and in Nigeria lies in how information is shared, protected, and acted upon.
There is nothing inherently wrong with communities supporting policing initiatives, even through lawful donations. However, corruption within the system has eroded public confidence. Both the police and the public must therefore do better, citizens by acting responsibly, and the police by operating transparently and professionally.
Only through shared responsibility and mutual trust can we achieve safer communities and improved security in our environment.
