To everyone asking if Simon Ruiz is injured… No.
First off, this was a brutal draw for an undefeated #2 seed—having to face a returning All-American from last year at this very weight on Thursday night.
That being said, if you want to make a finals run beating guys like Steed and Minto, you’ve got to beat Wask. Simon did it last year, didn’t get it done this time.
He is not injured.
He lost to a very good All-American at this weight last year who’s been ranked as high as #6 this season.
The difference in the match:
•A mental mistake from top—didn’t defend the granby (something we’ve never had to worry about with him).
For those who didn’t watch and are just looking at the box score:
•1st period: 0–0, Simon controlled the action and took most of the shots
•2nd period: Wask escapes after a missed granby cover
•Simon gets a takedown → 3–1
•Late scramble off another granby → Wask reverses at the buzzer → 3–3. This was a decisive factor in the match.
•3rd period: Simon escapes → 4–3 lead
•Gives up a takedown near the edge → 6–4, then escapes → 6–5
•With ~17 seconds left, Simon is in deep on a shot near the table—likely a takedown if there’s more mat space. But they love cramming those tables on the mat don’t they?! Review upheld no call
•Final seconds: Simon goes for it, gives up another takedown
He lost. That’s it.
Again—no injury.
He’s a sophomore who just took his first loss of the year to a returning All-American who was severely underseeded (#15). For context, he teched Valencia this round—last month, when Simon actually was banged up, that match was only 7–5.
Now the path forward:
He’ll have to wrestle back for 3rd. The biggest match will likely be the blood round—potentially against the loser of Kennedy vs. Kharchla.
That’s why this loss matters—seeding matters.
I believe in him. He can absolutely come back and take 3rd.
