The capitol welcomed the County Sheriffs of Colorado this morning. It was great to see Sheriff Darren Weekly from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office as well as Morgan County Sheriff David Martin. I greatly appreciate the #dedication of law enforcement officers in our state! 🚔

Sheriff Darren Weekly and Undersheriff Jason Kennedy, along with members of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard, were honored to participate in the Flag Sojourn 250 alongside fellow members of the County Sheriffs of Colorado. The Flag Sojourn 250 commemorates the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States of America. This historic American flag is traveling across all 50 states, serving as a powerful symbol of our nation’s founding principles, the sacrifices made to defend them, and the shared responsibility to uphold the Constitution. For those who have sworn an oath to protect our communities and defend the rule of law, standing with this flag is a meaningful reminder of the purpose behind our service. We are proud to stand with Colorado’s sheriffs in honoring our nation’s history and the freedoms that define America. The flag’s journey will conclude in Washington, D.C., on July 4, 2026, as part of the national celebration marking 250 years since America’s founding.

Today, Sheriff Curtis Johnson had the honor of presenting Avery Smith with a $500 scholarship on behalf of the County Sheriffs of Colorado (CSOC). Avery, an 18-year-old Monarch High School graduate, is headed to the University of Colorado to study psychology with the goal of becoming a pediatric occupational therapist. Outside the classroom, Avery is passionate about skiing, rock climbing, and traveling. Her favorite adventure so far was Morocco, with Machu Picchu next on the list. We wish Avery all the best in her next chapter and are proud to support her journey.

Our hearts are more than heavy today as we announce the passing of Deputy Diaz, the third to die from the recent horrific crash involving our motorcycle heroes. We stand in grief beside their families and friends to mourn and honor them; please lift them in prayer.
