A spotlight on collaboration: CFA and the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association are working hand in hand to boost the renewable fuels market in Canada. As demand for renewable fuels rises, canola-based biofuels are proving vital, with an economic impact of nearly $1.4 billion annually since 2021. This collaboration strengthens the renewable fuels market and benefits the entire value chain — from farmers to fuel producers. Last April, @WestJet announced a significant milestone: the purchase of the first sustainable aviation fuel supplied in Canada by CFA member @Shell, through its aviation division, Shell Aviation. The SAF acquired from Shell Aviation is blended with conventional jet fuel to meet all certification and safety requirements, while requiring no new investments in aircraft engines, fuel infrastructure, or distribution processes. Congratulations to CFA member @ParklandCorp for being the first company to successfully produce low-carbon aviation fuel in Canada. This milestone pilot project is a great example of what thoughtful government incentives can do to stimulate meaningful investments in made-in-Canada low-carbon fuel solutions here at home. CFA member, Tidewater Renewables Ltd. is continuing to make meaningful progress on the engineering design of its proposed 6,500 barrels per day sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in 2024. The team is integrating valuable insights from their Renewable Diesel & Renewable Hydrogen Complex into the SAF design, ensuring a robust and innovative approach. A final investment decision is anticipated in 2025. CFA member, @ImperialOil will soon host Canada’s largest renewable diesel facility, with a $720-million investment, slated to open in 2025. This plant is expected to produce over one billion liters of renewable diesel each year by converting canola and other locally sourced agricultural feedstocks. CFA member, @ParklandCorp is set to expand its co-processing capacity at the Burnaby refinery by 2028. As the first refinery in North America to co-process bio-feedstock alongside crude oil, Parkland is taking important steps toward low-carbon fuel production. Plans are in place to increase capacity from approximately 2,000 barrels per day to 7,500 barrels per day, all while ensuring that final products require no changes to fuel distribution systems or consumer behavior. Silicon Ranch has officially launched the Scotford Solar Farm, which is now in commercial operation as of August 2024. This 58-megawatt facility is expected to supply around 20% of CFA member @Shell's Scotford refinery’s electricity needs over the next 25 years. At peak capacity, it can provide 100% of the refinery’s energy requirements. An important step towards integrating renewable energy in industrial operations.
