the way i lowkey just found some really cool themes and symbolism in deltarune that i havent seen anyone else talk about or formulate into a cohesive statement. its something id need to probably make a proper essay on but definitely not tonight

@grahgamer I was trying to find a certain instance of John saying "hi karkat!", and the UHC's search system decided to give me a list of every page with the word "hi" on it that happened to include Karkat in them (probably due to the character timeline extension I have installed).

@chimeraAmbition (I should also note that this does not change when they are suddenly all adults. Adults still have egos, and self-image issues, and fantasies of who they are and what they're meant to do, and their actions and intentions can mismatch. People are complex creatures!)

@chimeraAmbition ...you will want to buy into their narratives of themselves and believe them. I'm not sure if I can really blame people for that, but I can also point out that everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, is a flawed narrator in this comic. You cannot just "take their word for it".

Footnote #3: Am I saying that Dave is absolutely 100% gay? Well, I do believe his romantic fling with Jade is genuine, and I do believe he fancies women, but my point here was moreso that you can't use "well he said he likes girls right here!" as an end-all-be-all argument.

I have seen many arguments stem about Dave's alleged bisexuality, arguments that only come as a result of taking his performative heterosexuality at face value. Rose's aura of stability and knowledge? Mostly performative. I could go on.

@chimeraAmbition This is a good point! And another example of why it's difficult to take characters' summaries of themselves at face value. People are complex, labels are messy, and when you're dealing with generational baggage in regard to them, you will say things that aren't entirely accurate.

@Cloverbugged I think people also run a lot with dave directly saying he's specifically gay, when imo he is remarkedly bisexual and was calling himself gay because he was using imprecise terminology in a vulnerable moment after 40 years of self-repression yk

@Wan90645 @meekursmees Mhm. If it's not Terezi or Vriska, then it's Nick Cage, or the image of her father. She comes from a place of accepting her lot in life and not having much in terms of aspirations, and she will attach herself to strong proactive people who can make her feel worthy, as an asset.

Footnote: I think a lot of people accidentally sort of understand this when they claim that Rose is lying about her backstory to garner sympathy.
They are also totally undermining her actual experiences and character, but you're so close to almost understanding! So close!!!

Homestuck is, in large, about performativism, and an audience that is used to characters being up-front and honest about their interests, emotions, and desires is not prepared for this. Characters will lie about themselves, or they will convince themselves of the truth.

@Wan90645 @meekursmees Roxy is such a supportive and "whatever you say <3" partner that June just gets bored with him. She can't handle it. She needs that opposing force, that someone to call her ideas stupid and to push her in the right direction, because otherwise she is just floating through life.

@Wan90645 @meekursmees June is somebody who needs conflict in her life and a force to push up against to really improve as a person, and it's interesting how she seems on some level aware of this. She likes being bossed around by Vriska, being bullied by Terezi, being insulted by Karkat...
