@CoachKMiranda @CoachHettinga For the “unsuccessful” that “jumped” in the portal, I’d love to know how many were actually forced into the portal to make room for others.

Wild Statistic about the Transfer Portal at the D2 level I learned at the Final Four: 30% of all D2 players jump in the portal each year. 60% will remain in the portal after jumping in. Last year over 1700+ players got in only 618 successfully transferred out.

@Coach_Drennan During the Division II meeting can’t quite remember the gentlemen’s name that spoke on it but showed all the statistics and numbers over the last 5 years. Did also include D1 and D3 numbers on there to compare. Let me see if I can find his name for you.

Spoke to 5 young coaches assistants & GA’s this week: 3 not going because they don’t have the $ & program won’t help 1 can’t attend because of portal visits & is needed on campus 1 taking a bus (his own $) & sleeping on someone’s floor Limiting opportunities ain’t right…

D1 basketball runs on the crazy and unseen work of managers and GAs. It’s sucks seeing so many left behind during the Final 4. It’s the biggest networking event in the sport. If they help build the program, we should help build their future. Get them to Indy!

@CoachDoty I just did a paper about 2 weeks ago on literally this. Investment in your sports create a successful sport programs and bring back 10 fold the money back to the university not only to be used for sports but research and academics as well.

Why invest in college sports? College presidents, board members, athletic directors, admissions offices, and fundraising teams know that successful athletics enrolls students, fills beds, and builds new buildings. Florida Gulf Coast’s admissions applications increased over 27% after their Sweet 16 run. Visits on the FGCU admissions page jumped from 2,280 to 42,793. Butler’s applications nearly tripled after two Final Fours while the university was able to build, expand, and upgrade $255M in campus facilities including a business school and a new arts center. George Mason’s admissions office inquiries went up 350% after their Final Four run in 2006 including a 54% increase in out-of-state applications. In the 1980’s, John Chaney’s men’s basketball program changed the landscape of Temple University as a whole helping increase freshmen enrollment by 18.1% and transfer enrollment by 6.1%. Nick Saban’s football program helped propel the University of Alabama. Between 2007 and 2022, enrollment at Alabama increased by 51%, from 25,580 to 38,645 students. In that same time, the college more than tripled its endowment, surpassing a record $1 billion in 2022. It also has nearly doubled its physical footprint, adding an engineering quad and state-of-the-art dorms and recreational facilities.

The most confused kids right now are the ones who have had some success (not gaudy numbers) at D2. They have serious D1 FOMO & think they can fetch a lot more money at D1 than possible. These are the guys that should stay for at least another yr especially if on a full ride.

Seeing a lot of D2 guys enter the portal & get mainly low major D1 interest. Are they keeping big picture in mind? Little to no NIL $$ at those levels of D1. If the goal is to play overseas, what’s the best route? Rotation guy in a LM/MM league or being a 20 ppg guy in D2?
