🧠 Parkinson & Inflammation💥 @JCI_insight Parkinson's disease (PD) involves the loss of dopamine neurons in the brain. Research shows that inflammation, particularly involving astrocytes, may contribute to this process. @txell_pons, @angiedidomenico, @BigSpinLab, @agrrp, Antonella Consiglio and their colleagues used astrocytes derived from PD patients' stem cells and found they release high levels of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-6, which harms dopamine neurons by binding to IL-6 receptors. Treatment with Tocilizumab, an anti-IL-6 receptor antibody, prevented this damage. Postmortem brain analysis of early-stage PD patients confirmed these findings. This suggests targeting IL-6 signaling in astrocytes could be a promising therapeutic approach for PD.
