Armenians and Georgians need to understand a simple reality. Their fate in the South Caucasus is closely tied together. If either side fails to grasp that fact, both will pay a heavy price in the long run. If some Georgians believe Georgia can remain secure while Armenia is weakened or pushed aside, they should study Armenian history more carefully. In this region, weakness does not create peace. It invites pressure. If Armenia falls out of the balance, Georgia will not be left alone for long. The same forces that threaten one will eventually turn on the other. That is why Armenia and Georgia should think seriously about a much closer relationship, whether through a formal union or a durable strategic partnership. The South Caucasus is not a forgiving place. Our dangers are real, and many of them are shared.

I am appalled by the fact that, apparently, Zura Makharadze had the honour of carrying Patriarch Ilia II's coffin (pallbearing). Never mind the fact that Makharadze, one of the leading figures of openly pro-Russian, violent hooligan group Alt-Info, is under US Magnitsky sanctions for physical attacks against journalists and LGBT people, which resulted in the death of a TV cameraman in July 2021. That's not even the main issue here. The issue is that Makharadze represents the worst, the most un-Christian form of conservatism and churchgoing. Even in the eyes of allies, Makharadze would be a ravaging hooligan. I do not believe that there would be no person affiliated with the Church with more Christian honour and dignity to pallbear for the Patriarch. I refuse to believe that.
