I think obtaining a badge has more to do with just being a good trainer. It's also about your bonds you show with your pokemon and you yourself as a human being. Also whether you're the main protagonist or not

Hot take: Ash didn't beat Sabrina. He won by accident. Haunter wasn't even caught by Ash. It just followed him, crashed the gym battle, and did a stand-up comedy routine until Sabrina laughed. Ash got a pity badge because a random ghost decided to be a prankster.
