For most of human history we lived in small groups where survival depended on loyalty to the tribe and suspicion of outsiders. The human brain was built for that world and it still runs the same program today. We changed the setting but not quite the hardware. Eight billion tribal minds operate nuclear weapons, global markets, and planetary systems. Politics, religion, and ideology are masks for the same ancient instinct. The idea that humanity will simply outgrow tribalism through enlightenment sounds awesome on paper, but it ignores our biology. Tribal thinking is part of the architecture of the brain. The only path beyond it may be to expand the mind itself. Merging with machines through networks, algorithms, and artificial intelligence that extend our thinking way beyond the limits of biology. Neural interfaces and cognitive augmentation (BCI's) are probably the next step. Transforming human intelligence into something more connected and less bound to tribal hard wiring. It will be weird because the purely biological human may not be the final version of our species. It will also be liberating because it could break the cycle of tribal conflict that has followed us since the beginning. If the choice were yours, would you remain biological and keep the tribal mind evolution gave you, or step into a new form of intelligence that could carry humanity forward?
