What really stings Provo diehards is that Dolores O'Riordan undeniably, provably spoke for the vast majority of Irish people on both sides of the border, when she expressed her horror and despair at innocent lives lost to PIRA violence. She exposed their total lack of legitimacy.

Some of the nastiest posts I’ve seen on this site have been of non-Irish people (especially left-wing Americans) ridiculing Dolores for writing an ‘anti IRA’ song. Leaving aside the fact that it was an anti-violence song against both the provos and British forces, I can’t think of a more deeply human refrain than ‘it’s not me, it’s not my family’ in response to a terrorist group murdering two children in our name. Sadly that empathy across borders is far too uncommon. It’s even more uncommon amongst people who watch conflicts from afar as a sport.

Fair play to you for brining supplies to Cuba and opposing the embargo. When you're there - might I suggest you call for the restoration of free speech, free assembly and a free press followed by real multi-party elections. Cubans haven't been allowed to elect their own Government since 1948 - oppressed first by Batista and his supporters and then the Castros with the help of theirs. If the England had imposed an embargo on Ireland, it would not have been an excuse trample on our rights and freedoms in Ireland and the US embargo is not an excuse to do so to Cubans.

'In her address, [President] Connolly again stated how Ireland, more than any other nation, was able to renew commitment to diplomacy and peace.' @Independent_ie This narcissistic exceptionalism needs to be called out. Nobody outside a deluded coterie of cranks in Ireland believes we are 'uniquely' positioned to lead in global affairs. How many times over the decades has Dublin, rather than Geneva, been the place where peace talks take place? There is a price to be paid when heads of state harbour delusions of grandeur and parrot them publicly. That price could well be paid tomorrow in the White House if a journalist asks the Taoiseach about the President's comments.
