I was impressed by the U.S. rescue of the downed airman. It is a rare remoralizig action, an elevation ritual, something good in modern society so bereft of such gestures. Great expense and effort to rescue fighters who might otherwise become prisoners further shows a high level competence. It elevates the prestige of a fighting force and its soldiers with good reason.

What is funny about those posts from the pro-Israel brigade on how the UAE withdrew from the Rafale F5 program to punish France for its "betrayal" is that we have actually been shooting down Iranian drones over the UAE since the beginning of the war, because despite what low-IQ American posters think France actually honors its commitments, but those morons don't know that because they don't know anything. The UAE withdrew from the program because of a dispute over technology transfers, which doesn't seem to have anything to do with the war or any imaginary "betrayal" of the UAE by France. This is just another fake story created by propagandists who are butt-hurt that France recognized Palestine a few months ago and had the audacity to make some very mild criticisms of Israel's scorched earth policy, which feeds on the Europe Derangement Syndrome that American rightoids have recently developed.

Le truc basique à comprendre c’est qu’avec les Etats-Unis qui vont vider l’OTAN de sa substance, abaisser la sécurité du détroit d’Ormuz et diminuer les fournitures d’armes à l’Ukraine, c’est une occasion en or pour la France qui est le seul pays européen à avoir une marine opérationnelle, une armée qui peut se projeter, l’arme atomique, du nucléaire civil et une industrie de l’armement complète de reprendre le leadership continental. Mais que pour profiter de cette occasion il faudrait que la France double son budget militaire (passe de 2 à 4% du PIB), et que sans les moyens politiques de couper dans les dépenses (qui sont aujourd’hui principalement des dépenses sociales liées au vieillissement de la population - 22% du Pib) elle ne pourra pas saisir cette chance. Pendant ce temps l’Allemagne est en embuscade et elle a bien doublé son budget militaire et ne compte pas vraiment acheter des armes françaises mais plutôt sauver son industrie en déréliction (bon elle doit aussi verser sa dîme aux Américains pour essayer de ménager ses débouchés commerciaux, ses approvisionnements en gaz, et ne pas se retrouver trop tôt en tête à tête avec la France.) Nous sommes donc face à la plus belle occasion géopolitique pour la France depuis sans doute les années 60, et nous risquons de passer à côté de notre objectif stratégique millénaire de redevenir la puissance dominante d’Europe. Pour tous ceux qui se soucient de ces enjeux géopolitiques majeurs, il n’y a pas de plus grande question à résoudre.

It is the NATO member simultaneously bordering Iran, Iraq, Syria, and the Black Sea, and trying to mediate the Iran war. Questioning Turkey’s role is itself not realistic under current circumstances.
