This is the point that some of us have been making but which many people grossly misunderstand. No one is denying that there are killings, kidnappings and banditry in Nigeria especially in the north. But to label these as genocide solely targeted at Christians is not giving the true picture of a complex problem. Rather than arguing endlessly, what is really important now is to focus on identifying and implementing solutions urgently in order to bring an immediate end to these tragedies. Decentralise the police and make it local, allow for licensed private security services, strengthen Nigeria’s porous borders, deploy more advanced technology for surveillance and reconnaissance, embark upon more de-radicalisation programmes, target the sponsors and financial networks that sustain these killings etc.
