@GunnerDobbins The anime hits much higher notes but being able to watch One Piece without every interaction being stretched out unnaturally and having to skip 10 seconds further so often is nice. The heart of the anime is better but the overall product of the LA is better, imo.

I think scene actually goes a bit deeper than just a great joke (which in part is why it's a great joke.) See, the third sequel to the Mummy and the cartoon (granted perhaps it's canonicity is dubious) show that supernatural powers outside Ancient Egypt exist. The fact Imhotep recognizes Hebrew as "the language of the slaves" also seems to hint the events of Exodus happened. So why did none of Beni's religious symbols protect him? Was their power not enough in the face of Imhotep's dark magic? They never had power, they were just trinkets. Why? Because Beni never had any faith in the higher powers behind them. Not truly. Because, IIRC, Beni was shown throughout the film to be a duplicitious, cheating coward who cared only for his own safety and standing. Regardless of the theological and spiritual differences of the faiths he invoked, I think all would reject him. Because his invocations are hollow. His prayers are insincere, especially with how quickly he switches between the different faiths when one doesn't immediately answer. His faith in them in hollow and performative, even in the face of creature that be would recognized by true believers in each as a true, supernatural evil. One that Beni decides to serve to save himself and in hopes of being rewarded...even if it dooms the world. Which makes his death all the more poetic. Surrounded by glittering riches, yet ultimately trapped with no one to help him. His only company a swarm of flesh-eating beetles, remnants of his undead master's dark power...now there to claim him as well. Which they do, as the light of his torch dims and darkness closes in with the swarm.
