@dutch_import @WSJ The Pope criticizing war between states is nothing new. Most modern Popes have criticized war. Coming out not as strongly on those other issues doesn't make him wrong about war being bad.

The pope is measuring with two sticks He is criticizing the Iran war as an immoral war. But he did not attack Iran for its immorality in killing more than 30 THOUSAND of its own citizens. He’s not vehemently criticizing the Muslims killing Christians in Nigeria Catholics have a faith. The pope is just a temporary leader. Your remark that Catholics should choose a new religion is insulting and absurd. When Americans don’t like Trump should they choose to live in another country? Because that’s what your insinuating. 😳

Pope Leo XIV is facing the biggest test of his papacy in a fight with President Trump over the Iran war—and he isn’t folding. So far, it is Trump—not Leo—who has taken criticism from Roman Catholics in the U.S. and elsewhere over their public spat. 🔗 on.wsj.com/4tJtZNW

@dutch_import @WSJ What he's said seems pretty in line with church teachings. If Catholics are offended, they should pick a new religion.

There is so much. Here are a few • He has repeatedly opposed border walls or strict closures, famously stating in 2016 (in response to then-candidate Donald Trump’s wall proposal) that “a person who thinks only about building walls… and not building bridges, is not Christian.” • In other remarks, he called repelling migrants (via restrictive laws or militarization) potentially a “grave sin” and warned that policies built purely on force “will end badly.”

@WSJ 🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱 Nope As a Catholic the pope is making centrists and people on the right very upset with his left wing statements. The Catholic church is not unbiased and is testing Catholics in their belief in the rulers of the church. Not their faith.

Nice try WSJ. The Pope is fighting a battle never sanctioned or empowered by God. God's power is humility and no where in the New Testament do we see Jesus or the Apostles offering political solutions for Roman oppression. It's one of Satan's great lies and therefore destined to failure.

@WSJ not what i am seeing on SM ..it is the Pope getting the backlash from Catholics.. Trump is getting trashed by the usual suspects.. liberals.. but it is funny that the soulless, Godless left is all of the sudden embracing religion by standing with the Pope 😂😂

I have many Catholic friends disappointed in the Pope being a left wing globalist engaging in politics… but anyone who knew his past knew he had TDS and was aligned with Marxist Obama. The Catholics I know go to mass on Sunday and follow the Sacraments. They think like me. We have a bad Pope. Our President is not perfect but his policies are what I voted for.

There is behavior that's so self-evidently deranged that merely seeing it should lead to fury and disgust. I'm concerned, however, that some evangelicals are so influenced by Trump that they won't unite with their Catholic brothers and sisters in response to Trump's blasphemy and intolerable attacks on the pope, but will instead turn against them.

Tom Nichols and Nancy Youssef spent 30 minutes on Radio Atlantic dissecting what just happened. Two observations stand out above the rest. Nichols: "We have a very clear reason for the war now, which is to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which wouldn't have been closed if we hadn't gone to war in the first place. In that sense, yes, we created a clear war aim by starting a war." Youssef: Iran discovered during these 39 days that it has a deterrent capability that is immediately available, generates revenue, and gives it enormous influence over the global economy - the Strait of Hormuz. She argues Iran may now be less interested in nuclear weapons as deterrence because the strait works better, faster, and with less international blowback. The country Trump went to war to keep from getting a bomb may have found a more effective weapon in the process. Those two observations together describe the strategic result. The war aim was created by starting the war. The adversary is stronger for having survived it. The regime is intact. The strait's status as an unchallenged international waterway is now permanently uncertain. And the Gulf states who built their security around American bases discovered those bases made them targets. Nichols called it: operational successes without strategic direction don't get you toward victory. He used to teach that at the Naval War College. He was right then. He's still right.

Trump's negotiators are begging the Iranians to reopen a shipping lane which wasn't closed until he started this disastrous war, but he actually thinks anyone will believe "regardless, we win"
