@ed_fin made another good point (I asked him a question - why aren't there more crossings, provided that a VLCC trip through Hormuz can probably make $50-100mm, if not more). If the shipowner takes the risk and loses the ship he is out of the most lucrative market in his life and even if he receives insurance payout, forgone profits would be very large. PS Still puzzled as to why the Greek pirates are not risking more often; but I guess the risk of being hit is quite high.
