The spaceship in the book is so funny because Weir is a good writer but he has no spatial or visual imagination. He's like, "uh, there's a cylinder, and like three more cylinders I guess? With cones on top, I don't know, it doesn't matter."

Anyway I would argue the simple prose explaining complex science for a layman audience is very thematic. The main character is a teacher for many reasons.
