Only a few of the Uganda Wildlife Authority vets and rangers supporting the return of rhinos to Kidepo were alive when the last rhino was poached in 1983. Today, a determined new generation is restoring Ugandaโ€™s protected areas and wildlife a generation that truly lives the UWA slogan: โ€œConserve for Generations.โ€ Dr. Crispus Singoma, Principal Vet at Kidepo Valley National Park, is no stranger to pushing boundaries. In just three years as a young vet in Murchison Falls, he has rescued over 500 animals from snares and traps. He has also trained at the Zimbabwe Wild Capture Course in Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, supported rhino work in Akagera National Park (Rwanda), and collaborated in Kenya with Dr. Matthew Mutinda. This morning, Dr. Crispus shared: โ€œI feel like I am dreaming, this opportunity, this privilege for my country and profession. My heart is pumping so hardโ€ฆ letโ€™s do it!โ€ Translocating a rhino requires experience, and as these images show, Ugandaโ€™s teams are more than ready. We wish the entire team the very best. As Dr. Eric Enyel, Chief Warden of Kidepo Valley National Park, reflected: โ€œAfter 43 years rhino are returning to Kidepo. I come from Lira, not far away, where the rhino is our townโ€™s totem. Rhino will set foot on Karamojas soil once again. The countdown is on. I cannot thank the partners, donors, and former Chief Warden Richard Muhabwe enough.โ€ #Kidepo #kidepovalleynationalpark #rhinoconservation #UgandaWildlife #ugandasafari #ugandacf @GlobalConservation has been supporting Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley National Parks through the Uganda Conservation Foundation over the past decade and it is proud of be part of this historical moment. Sad news. A collared research wolf was illegally killed near Yellowstone. This animal was helping us understand its own life and how wolves move near people, data critical to reducing conflict that threatens species recovery in the US and beyond. ftw.usatoday.com/story/sports/oโ€ฆ

It was inspiring to see EU NaturAfrica programmes from Uganda, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan come together to share experiences, strengthen capacity, and build lasting professional relationships. Transboundary conservation and development unite governments, communities, NGOs, and the private sector around shared landscapes and shared responsibility. At the heart of these partnerships are trust, mutual respect, honorable intent, and long-term commitment. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Enjojo Foundation (enjojofoundation.org) for their brave and ambitious work in South Sudanโ€™s Kidepo Game Reserve and Latoto National Park. Operating in historically unstable regions requires exceptional leadership, and Enjojoโ€™s efforts are laying foundations for peace, security, conservation, and development. As part of this journey, new scouts and park administrators from South Sudan visited Queen Elizabeth National Park for hands-on training and professional development. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Uganda Conservation Foundation (UCF) were delighted to host the group and support Operations Room and EarthRanger awareness training, demonstrating the power of collaboration across borders. Erik Enyel, Chief Warden of Queen Elizabeth National Park, said: โ€œYou could see the raw talent of South Sudanโ€™s scouts as they rapidly absorbed and learned from everything they saw and participated in. It was a wonderful experience to host them, we are truly in this together.โ€ Several EU programmes intersect through this collaboration, including EU NaturAfrica initiatives in the Kidepoโ€“Turkana landscape (Uganda/Kenya), Kidepo Game Reserve (South Sudan), and the Queen Elizabethโ€“Virunga National Parks landscape (Uganda/DRC), as well as the now-completed EU CITES MIKES programme. In Uganda, the Kidepoโ€“Turkana landscape EU NaturAfrica programme is implemented by a core team including the UWA, UCF, Northern Rangelands Trust, the Kenya Wildlife Service Training Institute, and Ugandaโ€™s National Forestry Authority. The programme supports transboundary conservation across Ugandaโ€™s Kidepoโ€“Karamoja and Kenyaโ€™s Turkana landscapes, strengthening protected area management, wildlife monitoring, humanโ€“wildlife conflict mitigation, and community livelihoods through a people-centered landscape approach. #EuropeanUnion #GlobalGateway #TeamEurope #biodiversity #natureconnection #protectedarea #TransboundaryConservation #LandscapeConservation #PeaceAndSecurity #sustainabledevelopment #africa #peopleandnature #ClimateAction #GreenDevelopment #ugandaconservation #capacitybuilding #RegionalCooperation #WildlifeRangerChallenge #EUInternationalPartnerships #ugandawildlife #conservation #kidepovalleynationalpark #kidepovalley #visituganda #queenelizabethnationalpark

The situation is fully under control, and the public may safely go on with their normal activities. We thank members of the public for their calmness, cooperation, and timely reporting, which greatly supported the safe resolution of this incident and ensured the protection of both people and wildlife. This outcome highlights that conservation is a shared responsibility. Through collaboration between KWS, partners, stakeholders, and local communities, we continue to protect our wildlife and coexist safely with nature.
