An alternate #tobacco tax system in #Bangladesh 🇧🇩 would improve #publichealth & ⬆️ revenues in FY2026-27 📈 Specifically, the proposal would: 1️⃣. Encourage ~0.5M adults to quit smoking & prevent >372,000 youth from initiating use & 2️⃣. Generate >BDT 85,000 crore in tax revenue.

🆕 #research on the #EU🇪🇺 finds that impact of the revision of the #TobaccoTaxDirective on #inflation would be relatively small & temporary 🔎 Relative to baseline inflation, the TTD revision would only ⬆️ inflation b/w 0.1 & 0.4 percentage pts in most Member States in 2028.

#Smoking prev. was largely unaffected by the #economic crisis in #Lebanon🇱🇧 2024 data shows: -10% ⬆️ in local & foreign #cigarette prices would ⬇️ demand 7% & 1%, respectively, similar to 2019 -10% price ⬆️ in local brands would ⬆️ demand for foreign brands 3%, more than in 2019
