Massive Government U-turn on inheritance tax, increasing the APR/BPR allowances from April 2026 to £2.5m per person from £1m per person. I am so relieved - I know many people for whom this will change their lives and allow their children to continue the family business rather that seeing it collapse. Huge thanks go to everyone involved in lobbying, especially the NFU, CLA, TFA, and the dozens of individually freely giving their time to see a change. Also to the Conservatives and other opposition parties for being steadfast and committed. However I do recall sitting in a key decision-maker's office, discussing that this sort of proposal might happen and we would all be expected to be grateful for an utterly stupid proposal finally being pared back to one that is merely economically unwise. This is where we are now. The changes to APR/BPR should be scrapped in their entirety, not tweaked because everyone realised that Keir Starmer looked brutal and uncaring when the consequences of his proposals were explained to him. The changes to APR & BPR were unwarranted and inane from the first moment they were announced. The Treasury has put thousands of people through 14 months of hell for nothing but ideology, and they should suffer the political consequences of that. Been discussing this on and off all day. I think this is the only sensible thing to do. Trying to cherry pick areas here and there will cause such a tragic impact on growth that a single bump in income tax mostly avoids.

Daniel Zeichner on Farming Today says that farms will pay IHT at half the rate of all other businesses. That’s just wrong. The new rates apply equally to all businesses, not just farms! When the farming minister doesn’t know his own Government’s policy there’s a problem.

@PhilipRutnam @NatChurchTrust Yup. All noted. Of course we’d like no limits/reductions but the £25k for a rural church in Norfolk struggling to survive makes a real difference.

@EdgecombeV @NatChurchTrust Virginia, good news but there are important points to note: extended for one year only, and a cap of £25,000 on the amount that can be reclaimed by any individual place of worship. The overall budget has also been cut to £23m (previous spend ~£30m, up to limit of £42m).
