Keir Starmer wants to make your food cheaper. The PM says that "every minute we focus on anything other than cost of living is a wasted minute”. Food is the most visible part of inflation for most people, and prices have gone up 40% since 2020. But there's a problem: the Government has limited direct control over food prices. The main drivers of recent food price inflation are: 🌾a global supply squeeze triggered by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine 🌡️climate-related shocks ⚡ increases in energy prices, also linked to the war, as well as Britain's dependence on gas. Meanwhile, supermarket margins are razor-thin, and VAT is already set to zero on groceries, limiting the Government’s options. So what can we do? To answer this question, @BritishProgress has teamed up with @LivingStandardC to publish new research, drawing on expertise and evidence from @SYSTEMIQ_Ltd. We find that there are two main levers the Government can pull to get prices down. 1. 🇪🇺 Closer alignment with the EU: negotiating and agreeing a deal on SPS, plus some customs arrangement, could lower food prices by 3-6%, depending on the level of alignment. 2. 🏗️ Reform planning to increase supermarket competition: current planning constraints benefit incumbents and limit the availability of lower-cost shops. Previous competition action that enabled the rise of Lidl and Aldi created estimated welfare gains of 3.5% on certain basic products. The Government could go further and introduce a permitted development right for grocery stores, which would make it easier to open new branches in underserved areas. I’m proud to unveil the Bakerloop - a brand-new, express electric bus service linking communities from Waterloo to Lewisham. To celebrate its launch, the Bakerloop service will be free to use during its first week, from 27 September to 4 October.

It was wonderful to join our fantastic #Lewisham Care Leavers last Friday and celebrate their achievements. @Edison1d, our @LewishamCouncil teams & I are so proud of them. These milestones matter, and we will be there for them as their corporate parents.

Brilliant time visiting the TNG Centre with @Edison1d, meeting some of the youth workers, volunteers and children who make it such a wonderful place. We had some really good conversations about how to make more out of this amazing youth centre. 🥊🧗‍♀️

I am so pleased this passed at Lewisham's Full Council last night with every Labour councillor in the chamber voting for these resolutions. This motion supports and highlights the tireless work of Cllr Sian Eiles (@SianySE) on the Pensions Investments Committee and everything she has done so far to ensure Lewisham's investments represent our Borough's historic values of justice.

Last night Cllr Mark Jackson and Cllr Yemisi Anifowose moved a motion on gambling reform. Lewisham have now joined a coalition of over 40 other councils calling for urgent reforms to tackle the harms caused by gambling and to restore decision making powers to local authorities.

Full @LewishamCouncil meeting last night - from 7.30 - 10.30pm - delighted that Mayor @Brenda_Dacres named @HubLewisham as our charity this year. Much needed work at Place Ladywell to redistribute donations to those in need.

Excited by this! Have seen first hand how thoughtful, driven, and engaged young people are - esp here in Lewisham where we have the 1st Young Mayor programme @LewishamYCP in the UK still going (over 20yrs!) with students running and voting in elections in schools. Next stop: GE!!

Tonight, at Full Council we agreed the following resolution on a motion on divesting our pension funds from companies operating within occupied territories and with human rights abuses.
