@joshrogin Well he unfortunately only cares about what is good for Nvidia and happy to come with whatever bs to justify helping CCP.

Anyone who understands the CCP’s strategy knows they will take U.S. tech when they need it and kick U.S. companies out of their market as soon as they can. Jensen is either naive or misleading us. Either way, handing our top tech to our greatest adversary is foolish and dangerous.
Dwarkesh Patel@dwarkesh_sp

Distilled recap of the back-and-forth with Jensen on export controls: Dwarkesh: Wouldn’t selling Nvidia chips to China enable them to train models like Claude Mythos with cyber offensive capabilities that would be threats to American companies and national security? Jensen: First of all, Mythos was trained on fairly mundane capacity and a fairly mundane amount of it by an extraordinary company. The amount of capacity and the type of compute it was trained on is abundantly available in China. Dwarkesh: With that, could they eventually train a model like Mythos? Yes. But the question is, because we have more FLOPs, American labs are able to get to this level of capabilities first. Furthermore, even if they trained a model like this, the ability to deploy it at scale matters. If you had a cyber hacker, it's much more dangerous if they have a million of them versus a thousand of them. Jensen: Your premise is just wrong. The fact of the matter is their AI development is going just fine. The best AI researchers in the world, because they are limited in compute, also come up with extremely smart algorithms. DeepSeek is not an inconsequential advance. The day that DeepSeek comes out on Huawei first, that is a horrible outcome for our nation. Dwarkesh: Currently, you can have a model like DeepSeek that can run on any accelerator if it's open source. Why would that stop being the case in the future? Jensen: Suppose it optimizes for Huawei. Suppose it optimizes for their architecture. It would put others at a disadvantage. As AI diffuses out into the rest of the world, their standards and their tech stack will become superior to ours because their models are open. Dwarkesh: Tesla sold extremely good electric vehicles to China for a long time. iPhones are sold in China. They didn't cause some lock-in. China will still make their version of EVs, and they're dominating, or smartphones, they're dominating. Jensen: We are not a car. The fact that I can buy this car brand one day and use another car brand another day is easy. Computing is not like that. There's a reason why x86 still exists. There's a reason why Arm is so sticky. These ecosystems are hard to replace. Dwarkesh: It's just hard to imagine that there's a long-term lock-in to the Chinese ecosystem, even if they have this slightly better open-source model for a while. American labs port across accelerators constantly. Anthropic's models are run on GPUs, they're run on Trainium, they're run on TPUs. There are so many things you can do, from distilling to a model that's well fit for your chips. Jensen: China is the largest contributor to open source software in the world. China's the largest contributor to open models in the world. Today it's built on the American tech stack, Nvidia’s. Fact. All five layers of the tech stack for AI are important. The United States ought to go win all five of them. in a few years time, I'm making you the prediction that when we want American technology to be diffused around the world—out to India, out to the Middle East, out to Africa, out to Southeast Asia—on that day, I will tell you exactly about today's conversation, about how your policy ... caused the United States to concede the second largest market in the world for no good reason at all.

Way more Dems than Golden want to continue this war. But they know it's politically toxic to vote for this war. So Dem leadership gets Golden to be the one vote to make sure this fails. He's not running for re-election, so he has nothing to lose. That's how this works.

BREAKING: The House just failed to pass a resolution to end Trump's war with Iran by one vote. The count was 213-214. Just one Democrat, Jared Golden, voted to let Trump keep waging the war.

This is not unexpected. I’ve heard from many sources for quite some time that Lyons has wanted to spend more time with his family. One of his sons will be in his last year of high school later this year. Lyons plans to finish out until 5/31 and assist with transition.

BREAKING: I’m told that Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons submitted his resignation to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin today. He will be staying on until May 31st to help with the transition. He oversaw roughly 584,000 ICE deportations since President Trump’s inauguration, and plans to go into the private sector and spend more time with his family. Lyons has served in ICE for nearly 20 years, and previously served in the U.S. Air Force & as a city police officer. He is close with Tom Homan and has the respect of the ICE rank & file. Finding his replacement will be one of DHS Secretary Mullin’s first big tasks.

Compelling and chilling: “He was never charged. He was never prosecuted. And once his career was over, the allegations faded from public view just as quickly as they appeared.”
Tim Anderson@AssocAnderson

I knew Justin Fairfax. Our paths crossed during my first run for the General Assembly. Every interaction I had with him was professional, respectful, and measured. What happened to him politically should make everyone uncomfortable—regardless of party. At the exact moment Ralph Northam was facing collapse over the blackface scandal, allegations surfaced against Fairfax that effectively ended his political future overnight. He was never charged. He was never prosecuted. And once his career was over, the allegations faded from public view just as quickly as they appeared. That pattern—unproven allegations surfacing at the precise moment someone is about to rise politically—is not new. We’ve seen it play out nationally with figures like Brett Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas. Whether you believe those claims or not, the timing is always the same—and the damage is always permanent. Now we’re watching the aftermath of a life that, by any objective measure, was derailed in a matter of weeks. And the same political class that stood by—or benefited—at the time is now offering thoughts and prayers. That’s the part that ought to turn your stomach. If we’re going to be honest about accountability in this country, it has to cut both ways. Destroying someone publicly without due process, without proof, and without consequence is not justice. It’s politics at its worst. And it keeps happening because it works.

One reason I wish we took MeToo more seriously -- not politicizing it, not conflating unwanted advances or skeevy behavior with criminal assault, focusing on corroboration -- because the distance from sexual violence to fatal violence often isn't that far. See: Justin Fairfax.

People imagine that the destruction of this network allows Hungarian civil society to generate its own institutions. But what’s actually happened is that Brussels funded and incubated another much larger gravy train of NGOs to support Magyar and to now “represent” the new Hungary

This bit is just so important. So many people in the vague milieu of the populist (or whatever) Euroright were on the Orbán dole, directly or otherwise. His defeat is not great but the grief is magnified because it means the destruction of a whole superstructural industry.

Powerful post.
John Reid - The Reid Revolution@ReidRevolution

Of course this headline is just horrible… and there’s no excusing murder and the devastation I’m sure these children will feel for the rest of their lives- but this blaring fleeting headline is NOT the whole story. When I heard about this crime and tragedy this morning I couldn’t help but wonder if any of Virginia’s smug and abusive political leaders even consider that political hit jobs (with fake allegations?) can have tragic consequences that often reveal themselves many years later. I don’t just feel bad for this family and these poor children today… I feel bad about the last several years of horrors these people must have all been living. Justin called me several times last year after what was done to me to encourage me not to give up. My understanding from speaking with him privately was that he was ruined by what he swears were total lies. When I did the reporter thing and called around, his close associates said he couldn’t find or keep steady employment and that things had been pretty rough. With what little influence I had at the time I told him try to help get the FBI investigation files released on his case- because he said they would clear his name. No one was interested in helping or in exposing the truth- whatever that might actually be. The accusations did their job. He was destroyed politically and his life and family didn’t matter. Verifying the truth didn’t seem to matter to anybody either- Except to him. Even when I thought I might have a plan to get the files released it was clear (in my opinion) that he was scared and crushed that the process and inevitable renewed headlines would destroy what was left of his life and family. What a living hell. Like all of you- I do not personally know the entire story about what happened in hotel rooms decades ago. I do not personally know who suddenly released damning ALLEGATIONS about sex and abuse right as this man was being considered as Governor. And I do not personally know the pressures and situation in the Fairfax home last night. But… I can tell you the cutthroats in Virginia politics and everyone who lies or gleefully attacks others over rumors and allegations that are unlitigated and unproven should check themselves today. In candor- for decades I have talked A LOT on TV and radio and on social media. I have been very rough with many people over the years but if you have listened to me I am often the LAST person to jump to a conclusion or be condemning because I have paused to make sure I know the facts and not just the allegation. I am determined not to lie about people and I know my public words have the power to help or harm. I wish others in Virginia had paused to think about that burden when it came to the case of Justin Fairfax. And now look what has happened….. I’ll talk a little more about this on my broadcast today at 1:30pm. But it all makes me sick on many different levels.
