Owner wealth has nothing to do with it. The club is its own entity legally. And as its own entity it has to follow the profitability and sustainability rules, (PSR). This is to safeguard that clubs don’t over invest and risk the longterm economic health of the club. Regardless of who the owner is. Which means the club by itself are not allowed to make larger losses than £ 105 million over a three year period. That is when taking club revenue, minus costs, for three consecutive years the loss can not be larger than £105m. I.e nothing to do with how wealthy the owners are. Side note is that PSR doesn’t count all costs when calculating losses or profits. Some costs are exempt. Such as Academy costs, infrastructure such as redevelopment of stadiums, the women’s teams etc. So it’s basically player purchase, salaries, agent fees that are counted. And if a club buys a player for say 50 million. That cost is not counted at 50m for one single year but it’s rather counted as a cost of 10m for five years in a row. In Villas case they have made huge losses during the last couple of years. From 2021-2024 villas losses exceeded £200m pounds which is way higher than the PSR rules and indicate that they are not a well run club financially. Salaries alone are about 95 percent of total revenue. However about £100 million was then regarded as costs that are not counted by PSR such as Academy and infrastructure. Which is why they weren’t punished. Villas revenue is increasing and in fact they are dependent on an increasing revenue in order to not be punished. Should they not reach Champions league for a couple season they will once again be forced to sell players like they did with Ramsey. Should they have a couple of mediocre years they will drop very fast. In fact Villas model is very risky financially. However that risk has paid off so far. Most economists would say it’s not sustainable however but if they can reach CL a couple of years now they will have high enough revenue to balance the books and who knows.

Even at the start of the prem Uniteds team was built off of Carrington not money. Your club was nothing before money so your the biggest abject to that rule.
