Kalvin Phillips is not the only defensive midfielder in #ENG. But he was England player of the year & Rice isn't the same alongside Trent or Gallagher.
Phillips allowed Rice & forwards licence to attack. He was tenacious without the ball, consistent with it. He would win the ball back and drive the team forward. His presence stopped the forwards from dropping too deep.
Southgate must think no one he's picked can do that, otherwise why say it?
Against Denmark in Euro 2020, Phillips ran 15.3km, won the ball back 9 times in midfield and had 90% pass accuracy despite consistently trying to progress the ball and get England attacking.
He was the only player Southgate chose to play every minute during that tournament. And within the minutes he played, he covered more distance than any other England player.
Put it simply: Phillips ran way further, won the ball back more, and passed more accurately than we have seen any other England midfielder do since.
He did all the hard work that allows others to play.
And Trent doesn't do half of what Phillips did in that role.
Trent is a talented guy, undoubtedly more talented than Phillips. But Phillips worked harder than any other player in the squad. And you can't just take all that hard work out of a team and expect talent to magically do all the hard work for you.
Can Mainoo work as hard as Phillips did? Can Wharton? Trent can't and Gallagher despite his extra energy didn't control the game either.
I have no idea why it didn't work out for KP at Citeh or West Ham. Bielsa and Southgate were the only ones to get the best out of him in the past.
But Southgate couldn't pick him as he hasn't been playing.
But some people are claiming that Southgate mentioning Phillips was "bizarre". Go back and look at Euro 2020 and it won't be bizarre at all. No one is doing what Phillips did.
What is clear is that Southgate has to find a solution. Because that performance last night was as disorganised and lacklustre as I've seen from an England team. Denmark should have run away with it, and if he doesn't find someone who is prepared to do the hard work, and can organise a game from defensive midfield, they will not get past the quarter final.
