Last year, I bought a piece of land in the neighbourhood where I was born and bred but some people were not happy about it. I initially did not want to buy that land, but my dad persuaded me and that the family needed money for an emergency purpose. However, shortly after I purchased the land, some elders in the community plotted all sorts to make me lose the land, including approaching the local authority that they wanted to build a school on that land and another land. After some diggings, we found out that they were not happy because an “outsider” like me bought the land. Without contest, I offered to sell the land back to whoever was ready to buy it, by doubling the price, because I had already fenced it. At least, we are no longer in the olden days that someone would take over someone’s land without proper procedure. After some months, they finally said the land was not big enough for a school and some people pleaded that I should no longer sell the land but use it for the original purpose I wanted to use it for. I had planned to build a storey building of 4 mini flats. But I had already lost interest in the land because how can a community that I had contributed in no small measure considered me an outsider? Oh well, I am indeed an outsider, because I am not someone who forgets my roots to claim other people’s land or heritage. I am proud of my root. But if you must take over my land, which I bought with my hard earned money, you have to do it the proper way, not through such cheap plotting. Since then, I have withdrawn from the community, the people, stopped all my supports and channel it through another rewarding adventures. It’s also a big lesson and eye-opening experience for me that no matter how long you have spent somewhere and no matter how blessed you are that you support people, if you are not originally part of a whole, nothing can name you part of it, not even your benevolence. It just hurt deeply that this experience has also ruined my relationships with many people that I grew up with, whose parents and neighbours don’t mean well, as some of them would be wondering why I withdrew from them.
