A Nigerian Earning โ‚ฆ60 Thousand Now is Better Off Than a Nigerian Who Japa Five Years Ago โ€” Presidential Aide, Daniel Bwala Special adviser to the president on media and policy communications, Daniel Bwala has said that many Nigerians who moved abroad in search of greener pastures are facing harsh economic realities despite holding advanced degrees. Speaking on The Morayo Show, Bwala said some Nigerians in the United Kingdom are working jobs that do not match their educational qualifications. โ€œSome of you in Nigeria who think you are suffering, youโ€™re better off than your colleagues that japa five years ago,โ€ Bwala said. He described the situation as a form of modern-day exploitation, noting that many degree holders end up working in care homes and warehouses. โ€œAs far as I am concerned, it is modern-day slavery,โ€ he stated. According to him, although workers may earn about ยฃ2,600 to ยฃ2,800 monthly, most of the income is spent on rent, utilities, internet, transportation, and feeding, leaving little savings. โ€œAt the end of the day, what you are left with is not much. So you are forced to do two or three jobs,โ€ he said. Bwala argued that a Nigerian earning โ‚ฆ60,000 locally could still benefit from family support and lower living costs compared to someone struggling abroad. โ€œThat โ‚ฆ60,000 earner can still get support from family and friends, while many abroad have nobody to fall back on,โ€ he added. He also defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubuโ€™s social intervention policies, citing the 50 percent subsidy on dialysis in federal hospitals and the provision of free cesarean sections in public health facilities. โ€œPresident Bola Tinubu introduced 50 percent subsidy on dialysis in federal hospitals, and cesarean section has been made free in public hospitals,โ€ Bwala said. He added that the administration hopes to expand healthcare support to more services and prescription drugs as government resources improve.

I Make โ‚ฆ750k Monthly Selling Roasted Corn, and Two of My Children Are in Higher Institutions โ€” Ibadan Businesswoman Mrs. Lateef Rukayat, a roadside roasted corn seller in Ibadan, has narrated how she abandoned her hairdressing profession for the roasted corn business to support her family, saying the trade has enabled her to train two of her six children in higher institutions. Speaking with Tribune On The Street, Rukayat said the popular belief that roasted corn requires little capital is no longer true due to inflation. Although a bag of corn, which previously sold for between โ‚ฆ30,000 and โ‚ฆ35,000, now costs about โ‚ฆ15,000, she said traders still spend heavily on transportation, charcoal and packaging materials, making the business difficult to start. โ€œHairdresser is my hard-earned work; itโ€™s my early dream work, and I did freedom after completion,โ€ she said. โ€œI started roasting corn when my hairdressing business was not moving. All my children are in school, with two of them in higher institutions.โ€ Rukayat disclosed that she ventured into the business in January 2021 with money borrowed through a local lending scheme known as โ€œNetwork,โ€ saying the loan, which attracted interest, helped her buy her first bag of corn. She added that corn prices have continued to fluctuate since then. โ€œWith Godโ€™s mercy, on a daily basis, if I borrowed money and got like โ‚ฆ20,000 to buy corn, I used to earn about โ‚ฆ25,000 to โ‚ฆ27,000 daily. From the earnings, I contribute and thatโ€™s what I collect in supporting my childrenโ€™s schooling,โ€ she said. She lamented that roasted corn must be sold fresh, as leftovers lose their taste and are difficult to sell the next day. She also recalled making no profit after increasing the price of corn from โ‚ฆ200 to โ‚ฆ400 during a period of high costs because customers stayed away. Rukayat said she has never received a government grant and appealed for lower prices of goods and financial support to help small traders sustain their businesses and cater for their families.

Just seeing this now, and will try my best to simplify it for you, and anyone else reading, to the point you will understand. If you fail to grasp it this time, sorry, I can't help any further. I will not make it difficult to read, so I will leave bullet points. > Pan-Africanists are not shielding corrupt local leaders; Pan-Africanists believe in addressing their rascality from the source. There is a source. They were not always like this. Take, for instance, every single African leader in history who had tried to make a difference was either killed or violently overthrown. >Thereโ€™s a concept called โ€œimperialismโ€ - this happens when someone else controls your affairs to their advantage, and to achieve this, they must stop your own benefits (meaning stopping you from developing). >Imperialism comes in two forms: direct form (colonialism) and indirect form (neocolonialism) >Colonialism is the one you want us to forget, which sounds plausible until you consider the second form (neocolonism). Colonialism itself did quite an enormous damage that will take a while to repair. Now consider the fact that we are not even done remedying that, and the second form is alive and kicking. > Neocolonialim means, โ€œthey are not longer here to control you directly anymore, but they are still doing so remotely, through economic means (the IMF, World Bank, etc, politically (via democracy - a system introduced to you for this same purpose), culturally (via arts, entertainment, religion and football) and of course the Media (which includes the New media that we are having this conversation on).โ€ >So effectively, they left, but before they did so, they put in motion a mechanism to still maintain control even while they are gone. So, telling us to โ€œforgetโ€ not only reveals your poor understanding of history but also your lack of awareness of your present world, which basically means that you are still under the colonial mentality we are working so hard to correct. So rather than disparaging Pan-Africanists at every opportunity, you should rather be thanking us for the job we are doing, to which your survival depends on. Btw, Nkrumah published a book about the second form of imperialism (I mentioned here) and that rattled the United States to the point of severing diplomatic ties and leading to his overthrow after some months. What is even wrong with you people?

This is directed at those Pan-Africanists who somehow believe that colonialism, despite having ended over fifty years ago, remains the principal reason Africa is still underdeveloped, rather than the greed, the deep-seated greed and wickedness, that has taken root in the hearts of far too many of those entrusted with its future. It is also directed at those Afro-Americans who believe their lives are still chiefly defined by slavery that ended centuries ago, and who continue to demand reparations for an injustice they did not themselves directly experience.

No Japanese person forgets Hiroshima. No Japanese person forgets Nagasaki. But that doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™m going to look at an American kid, student, tourist, or friend living today and aim 80-year-old hatred at them. Some people see that and say, โ€œJapan is just bowing down to America.โ€ No. We simply donโ€™t mistake endless hatred for pride. Remembering the past and being ruled by the past are not the same thing. And if you canโ€™t even understand something that basic, maybe thatโ€™s why your country is still stuck behind.

The audacity of the Ibo people needs to be studied. Alex Onyia has shown himself to be a tribal bigot in the selection of students for his initiative. Also, he is a hater of Nigeria. Instead of just celebrating the kids or his programme, all his posts have been criticism of Nigeria. So Ibo people expect Nigeria to sponsor or celebrate a bigot and propaganda tool?

PRESS RELEASE FEDERAL MINISTRY OF FINANCE 5 July 2026 ๐‘๐„๐’๐๐Ž๐๐’๐„ ๐“๐Ž ๐‘๐„๐‚๐„๐๐“ ๐Œ๐ˆ๐’๐‘๐„๐๐‘๐„๐’๐„๐๐“๐€๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐๐’ ๐Ž๐ ๐๐”๐๐‹๐ˆ๐‚ ๐„๐—๐๐„๐๐ƒ๐ˆ๐“๐”๐‘๐„ The Federal Government has noted recent public commentary alleging that approximately two percent of GDP amounting to over โ‚ฆ8 trillion was spent outside the approved budget based on references to the IMF Representative in Nigeria and the Fund's 2026 Article IV Consultation Report. These claims are incorrect and risk misleading the public regarding the government's financial management. For the avoidance of doubt, the Federal Government does not operate a "shadow budget" or expend public funds outside the constitutional and statutory framework established for public finance. Under Sections 80 - 83 and 162 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), public funds may only be withdrawn and expended in accordance with the Constitution and laws enacted by the National Assembly. Accordingly, Federal Government expenditure is incurred pursuant to duly enacted Appropriation Acts, Supplementary Appropriation Acts, and other statutory authorities enacted by the National Assembly. In addition, multi-year capital projects which necessarily span multiple budgets are implemented in accordance with extant laws and approved provisions for capital rollovers where applicable. These are recognised features of public financial management and should not be misconstrued as expenditures outside the budget. It is inaccurate to suggest that trillions of naira have been secretly spent outside legislative approval. Such allegations should have identified the specific projects purportedly executed without appropriation or legal authority and present credible evidence in support of the claim. To be meaningful, assertions of this magnitude must be supported by verifiable facts rather than conjecture. For the purpose of public education, it is important to distinguish between appropriation, expenditure authorisation, financing, and fiscal reporting. Nigeria's public finance framework contains several statutory transfers, first-line charges and intervention mechanisms established by Acts of the National Assembly. These include, among others: - Statutory allocations and contributions to development commissions and other agencies created by law. - Cost of collection and cost of administration retained by designated revenue-collecting agencies as expressly provided under relevant legislation. - Capital expenditure approved in separate budgets for some agencies and the Federal Capital Territory by the National Assembly. - Special interventions approved by law to address national priorities such as security, infrastructure, disaster response, and other strategic national programmes or emergencies. - Debt service obligations and other statutory transfers that are authorised under applicable legislation. These expenditures are neither secret nor illegal. They are established by law, disclosed in various fiscal reports, and subject to applicable oversight, audit and accountability mechanisms. Their treatment for reporting purposes may differ from their presentation in the annual Appropriation Act, particularly under international statistical and reporting standards adopted by the Federal Government. Such classification differences should not be misrepresented as evidence of unlawful expenditure. It is equally incorrect to suggest that the reported amount represents an increase in budget deficit. A fiscal deficit is determined by the relationship between total government revenues and total government expenditures. Whether a capital project is financed through annual appropriations, supplementary appropriations, statutory transfers, approved intervention mechanisms, or other lawful financing arrangements does not, by itself, increase the fiscal deficit. Indeed, the IMF's observation relates primarily to the comprehensiveness, timing and presentation of fiscal reporting rather than the legality of expenditure. Like many countries, Nigeria continues to strengthen the alignment between budget presentation and international fiscal reporting standards as part of ongoing public financial management reforms. As a matter of fact, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR had himself formally requested the National Assembly to end the practice of running multiple and overlapping budgets, and rather harmonise into a single, cohesive framework during his presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly on December 19, 2025. The Federal Government remains firmly committed to prudent fiscal management, transparency and accountability. Recent reforms have significantly strengthened public financial management with ongoing improvements in budget assumptions and credibility, transparent revenue administration, digitalisation of government financial processes, and stronger treasury management. These reforms have been acknowledged by the IMF itself and other multilateral institutions, as well as international credit rating agencies, major media organisations and investors. Public debate is both welcome and essential in a democratic society. However, it should be based on facts and an accurate understanding of Nigeria's constitutional and fiscal framework. Mischaracterising technical observations as evidence of unlawful expenditure neither advances informed public discourse nor strengthens democratic accountability. The Federal Government will continue to uphold the rule of law, maintain transparency in the management of public resources, and work with the National Assembly, oversight institutions, development partners and the Nigerian people to further strengthen fiscal governance in line with international best practices.
