The Fort McMurray Fire Department (FMFD) is growing and has active postings for training officers, firefighter-paramedics and non-fire trained advanced care paramedics. Applications are also now being accepted for the Firefighter Cadet Program for registered paramedics who do not have fire training. In total, more than a dozen full-time positions will be recruited this spring. “It’s an exciting time for the department—we’re moving forward, and we’re looking for people to help us build the future,” said acting Regional Fire Chief Kelly Roberts. This Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 1:55 pm, don’t be alarmed when your cell phone, radio or television broadcasts a test alert. This test is an important way to ensure alert systems are working, and a good reminder for everyone to be prepared for real emergencies.
Alberta Government@YourAlberta

On Wed., Nov. 19 we’re testing the @AB_EmergAlert system. It’s just a test but a great reminder to be prepared for any real emergencies. Make sure your devices are ready to receive alerts and be sure to download the Alberta Emergency Alert mobile app at alberta.ca/emergencyalert

Weiner dogs have a great sense of smell, but even "Honey" can't tell if Carbon Monoxide levels are too high. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas that has no colour, taste, or smell. It is impossible to detect without an alarm. This Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week (Nov. 2-9) make sure there’s a working CO alarm on every level of your house and near every bedroom. Test them every month and replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If your CO alarm sounds, leave the house immediately and take your fur babies with you. Know the signs of CO poisoning - symptoms may be flu-like and include dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath, confusion and blurred vision. 🔥Your furnace, hot water tank or any household appliance which runs on natural gas or propane can produce CO gas. Have heating equipment and chimneys inspected by a professional every year, before cold weather really sets in. 🚘A vehicle running in an attached garage, even with the garage door open, can also cause CO to enter your home. If you need to turn on your vehicle to warm it up, don’t leave it sitting in the garage while the engine’s running. Drive it out right away. ❄️During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow build-up. Help keep your family, including your fur-babies, safe this season. Learn more at rmwb.ca/fireprevention
