Back in 2006, I had a 10-hour layover in Germany while traveling to Iran with my infant son. As a mother, it was heartbreaking to keep a fragile baby stuck in an airport that long. To leave the airport for just a few hours and get a hotel, I needed a visa. And getting that visa? A nightmare endless barriers for a young mother with a 7–8 month old child. Why? Because I was Iranian. Because my passport was not “trustworthy” in the eyes of the European Union and as far as I know, nothing has changed. So explain this: when it comes to holding a brutal regime accountable, Europe suddenly goes silent. These “educated” politicians seem perfectly comfortable dealing with oppressive rulers but when it comes to ordinary Iranians, they scrutinize us relentlessly, treating us as if we are the problem.
