Mining helped shape the American West, driving growth, creating jobs and providing raw materials that allowed our nation to build and thrive. From early prospectors to modern operations, mining has played an important role in strengthening our nation's economy. ⛏🏔 But some of the earliest mining practices also left behind environmental challenges that communities are still facing. That's why Region 8 works with our state, federal, Tribal and commercial partners to clean up former mining sites through our Superfund and Brownfields programs. 👷‍♂️⚒ As we get ready to celebrate America's 250th birthday, it's a good time to reflect on the industries that helped build the nation. Mining is still important to the West today, and we're committed to making sure it's done responsibly - protecting human health and the environment while supporting strong local economies for the next 250 years. 💲🌄

A coal seam here in the Powder River Basin is much larger than seams back East. Although lower BTU than coal in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia….still impressive to see. @FriendsofCoalKY, do you have a picture of a KY coal seam? @countoncoal

.@POTUS: "Coal is also critical to our national security... That’s why I’m also pleased to announce that in just a moment, I will sign an executive order that directs @DeptofWar to work directly with coal plants on the new power purchasing agreements, ensuring that we have more reliable power and stronger and more resilient grid power."
