@edoublea @rob_robby @UnrealEngine I understand your not arguing either side. I am not trying to either. Just in the name of tech. In my experience, I am unable to achieve the same thing in unreal though and want it to be possible. In my tests it tends to nose dive above 150-200 lights no matter my setup.

@GamesSoaring @rob_robby @UnrealEngine I don't believe that is the case. With low overlap, Unreal can handle the same. Just to clarify: I am not making an "Unreal is better than Unity" argument, they're both great. Just that they are both capable of that specific example.

@edoublea @rob_robby @UnrealEngine Sure, its low overlap vs high overlap in your test, and lower fidelity vs higher fidelity, but the video would be impossible in unreal with the current lighting options which limits how lights can be used.

@edoublea @rob_robby @UnrealEngine Its neat and all, but unreal has always gone quality over quality. Even 100 lights is a limitation and they need to do much better. @MathijsVRC @FreyaHolmer You can also do things other software is not. If you look at Mari vs Photoshop you will see an example in regards to painting, not modeling.

@FreyaHolmer What would the advantages be over other modelling software, like blender? I understand it would be very useful to have a modelling tool directly in a game engine, but that kinda gets lost when it becomes a standalone app

guess what!! my modeling tool is now, standalone, kinda!! it has NO features WHATSOEVER bc I stripped all the unity editor related stuff which was the entire interface to editing meshes, BUT the code is compiling!!

@MathijsVRC @FreyaHolmer There is a state of mind to modeling too. Softimage is SO much better to work in than Blender for modeling because of how the tool works and keeps you in the modeling "zone".

@Mangalawyer Tthe game Breakwaters does fluid sim at a world scale. The biggest in game industry history. The tech is there, the will to do it isnt in large companies.

@FreyaHolmer @jumpquestgame Agreed. I have a custom rendering system in unity where I need to deal with something similar. I use a combination of arrays to manage adding and removing without bloating the arrays. Plus a custom add/remove compute shader to update gpu data.

@GamesSoaring @jumpquestgame sure! although the hard part isn't the actual swapping/removing, it's dealing with the re-indexing of by-index references

what's a nice way to remove elements and shift all by-index references to it, among arrays of thousands of elements? rn I'm thinking either: A. shift immediately (simple, but multiple iterations) B. defer shifts, track offset thresholds (complex, but only one iteration)

@FreyaHolmer @jumpquestgame Unity has some "RemoveAtSwapBack" methods. Maybe one works on your setup. Sounds similar to what you want to do.

Should trophies from a hard boss fight be wall-mounted decor, or a unique "fun" hat you can wear?

@FreyaHolmer Constant Buffers, but for me its mostly for performance improvement, not for organization. It helps some with the organization though.

are there some more, lesser known tools, to organize a lot of GPU code in unity? (already using .cginc and custom structs for data types)

@forte_bass Depends on your motive and relationship. One idea I like is you can have a heavier split (75/25 until recoup) but a monthly min for the dev of X $ first so they can hit their base operation costs. For some devs this may be tiny, but for some too much to be fair to the pub.

OH. This is a fun question. If I try to be fair to BOTH dev and full service pub, also try to stay close to our current models: 65/35 Pub until recoup, then flip. Also a time cap ~7 years from launch. I wanna hear more answers, please tweet your ideas.

@FreyaHolmer All good reasons :) Also float3(0.6f) can fail to compile on some console platforms, but you wont know until you build for that platform. I have a similar trust issue and readability with if() vs if(){} 😅
