Today the Irish Times has published two antisemitic letters to the editor, both of which places collective guilt on Jews globally for the actions of the Israeli government. There is a direct correlation between this antisemitic charge of collective guilt and the violent antisemitic attack against a Jewish man in Dublin Bus last week. An incident, by the way, that Irish media refused to report about or publish comment on. While the status of Ireland as ‘the most antisemitic country in Europe’ is up for debate, there can be no denying that our media establishment is the most antisemitic in Europe. And it’s not even close. The Irish Times publishing these letters marks a dangerous escalation in mainstreaming the belief here that Jews in Ireland (and elsewhere in the diaspora) are to blame the actions of a government across the world that is not theirs. I feel sick to my stomach thinking of the next act of physical violence against random Jews here due to the normalisation of this antisemitic charge. If and when that occurs, the Irish media establishment will be directly responsible for it.
