For over two centuries, we relied on Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation. These were a brilliant set of equations that could predict the motion of planets with stunning accuracy. However, Newton himself was haunted by a massive conceptual hole: The Mechanism.
Newton knew what gravity did, but he had no idea how it was communicated across the vacuum of space.
To him, it appeared to be an "action at a distance." It looked like an invisible, instantaneous pull that required no physical medium to travel through.
Einstein changed the game by replacing the "pull" with "geometry."
The realization that gravity is not a force communicated through space, but rather the behavior of space itself, brought a paradigm shift to our understanding of the universe.
In this model, mass curves the fabric of spacetime. Objects then simply follow the curves created by that mass.
