@DiscussingFilm I feel like this movie is being astroturfed or something. It’s not scary… more artsy dread/horror imo There are some really cheap attempts at jump scares too, honestly disappointed A24 is amplifying posts from people new to horror or something 💀it’s not THAT scary cmon

@DiscussingFilm Top to bottom — the worst movie I’ve seen in years. Lazy and boring. There isn’t one redeemable scene in the entire film. There is literally nothing about this movie to like.

#undertone has a good creepy atmosphere and great sound design and visuals, but the story could’ve been better. The story was a tad confusing at the end with a lackluster ending. 7.5/10

@anishmoonka Worst film I’ve seen in years. Thoughtless in every single way. Congrats on cashing in. You only get to f*ck the audience once before yours blackballed, This movie is trash and as a horror fan — I will trash Tuason at every opportunity.

Every dollar spent making this film has returned $30, and it hasn’t even opened internationally yet. The story behind Undertone’s $500K budget is wilder than the movie. Ian Tuason wrote the script during the pandemic while caring for both of his parents through cancer in their family home in Rexdale, a suburb of west Toronto. Both parents died during that period. He poured their modest inheritance into the film, funding a third of the budget out of his own pocket. Canada’s federal film funding body had already rejected one of his earlier projects. So he scraped together private money and shot the movie in the same house where his parents died. The tiny budget forced a creative choice that ended up defining the whole thing. Only two characters ever appear on screen. Every other person in the movie is a voice you hear but never see. That let Tuason build the entire horror experience around sound instead of special effects. The tagline: “the scariest movie you’ll ever hear.” It premiered at Fantasia, one of the biggest genre film festivals in North America, last July. Won the Audience Award. Six distributors entered a bidding war. A24 won with a deal reportedly between $3M and $5M, which Tuason says was the largest film acquisition in Canadian history. So while the movie cost $500K to make, A24’s total investment was several million more. Tuason had predicted all of it on camera. A week after wrapping the film, he recorded an interview where he called the buyer (A24 or Neon) and named the exact dollar amount. He was right on both counts. A24 now has that footage. Opening weekend: $9.3M from 2,570 theaters, beating the forecast by 33%. Worldwide gross: over $15M so far, with the UK and Australia not opening until April. For comparison, Paranormal Activity was made for $15K and earned $193M. Blair Witch was made for ~$60K and earned $248M. Undertone cost more than both of those, but the returns were strong enough that the production company behind the Paranormal Activity franchise already hired Tuason to direct its reboot. His one condition: same Canadian crew, shoot in Toronto. The same government body that rejected his earlier work ended up putting $328K in marketing money into Undertone, after it was already finished.

A right-wing provocateur showed up to the No Kings rally today trying to bait protesters. He picked the wrong one. Watch what happens when you come with gotcha questions and meet someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. This is what informed, peaceful protest looks like. 8 million Americans. 3,000 cities. Every state. They were ready. DORK!

@marvalous80 @allenanalysis We’ve got an Uncle Tom! White liberals aren’t perfect, but they’ve done more for black folks than black folks have done for themselves. The things libs vote for don’t improve most white lives. They vote for it because it’s what’s right. Sorry if it hurts your feelings.

@allenanalysis By injecting themselves into episodes of social strife, White Liberals who think they are helping people, actually hurt them more than if they had just left them alone. For example: "Fighting" for Blacks makes them look weak and unable to stand up for themselves. Not good...
