Questo signore qualche anno fa, più o meno dopo la seconda mancata qualificazione dell’Italia ai Mondiali, venne accusato di aver costruito la Primavera del Lecce (campione d’Italia) con troppi ragazzi stranieri. La sua risposta fu semplice: i giovani italiani costano molto più degli stranieri. Spiegò poi che, se avesse trovato le stesse opportunità nel Salento o nel resto d’Italia, avrebbe scelto senza esitazione i ragazzi italiani, perché sarebbe stato tutto più facile e meno dispendioso anche in termini organizzativi. Perché scovare ragazzi all’estero è complicato: bisogna prendere aerei, treni, fare viaggi, osservazioni. In Italia, invece, ci si potrebbe muovere anche a piedi. Sembra un paradosso, ma è la triste realtà. Ma perché un giovane italiano costa più di uno straniero? La risposta è semplice. In Italia gioca chi ha i soldi. Molti ragazzi di famiglie modeste o non abbienti non riescono nemmeno ad accedere alle scuole calcio. Sul giovane italiano che deve emergere si scatena poi una filiera di interessi e speculazioni. Genitori, parenti, intermediari, procuratori, società che ne detengono il cartellino. L'altra problematica è che tante volte chi è davvero più forte viene scavalcato da chi è più sponsorizzato, o semplicemente inserito nei "meccanismi" di un sistema malato. E allora i club guardano altrove. In Africa o nell’Europa dell’Est trovano ragazzi a cui spesso basta un biglietto aereo, vitto e alloggio per accettare l’opportunità. Arrivano con una fame diversa, con meno barriere economiche e con famiglie che sperano nel salto di qualità. E per le società, alla fine, tutto questo costa meno. Ed è qui che si manifesta il nodo profondo del calcio italiano: un sistema che non riesce a valorizzare i propri giovani, né a renderne sostenibile la crescita. Ecco perché in Serie A ormai solo il 30% dei giocatori può essere convocabile in Nazionale. Ecco perché sempre meno italiani trovano spazio nei nostri club. Ecco perché fatichiamo a produrre calciatori di livello assoluto. Ecco perché l’Italia, sempre più spesso, resta fuori dai Mondiali. Sono passati più di tre anni da quella polemica, ma Pantaleo Corvino ha ancora ragione.
