May 27, 2019. Just after liftoff, a Soyuz-2.1b rocket carrying a GLONASS-M satellite was struck by lightning shortly after launch from Plesetsk Cosmodrome. As it climbed through charged clouds, the rocket’s presence helped trigger a lightning discharge that ran along its path.
The flight continued normally. The systems were designed to handle events like this, and no disruption occurred. It’s a reminder that even routine launches pass through some of the most electrically active and unpredictable parts of Earth’s atmosphere.
