He thinks this is a reason to stay dependent. It is the most compelling case imaginable for getting out now. Because what he has just described is not an alliance. It is a killswitch. Every item on that list is a lever Washington can pull the moment European and American interests diverge. And after the last two years, can anyone seriously argue those interests are identical? Europe doesn’t control its own air defences. Europe doesn’t own its targeting data. Europe cannot update its own fighter jet software without American permission. That is not a partnership. That is a client relationship with an increasingly unpredictable patron. And the timing has never been better. Russia is a spent force. Ukraine has field-tested an entirely new model of warfare that makes half that dependency list irrelevant anyway. Patriot batteries and Aegis cruisers are last century’s answer to last century’s threat. Europe is already building the next thing. The longer we wait, the deeper the integration goes. The more leverage Washington accumulates. The harder it becomes to leave on our own terms rather than theirs. He proved the case for independence. He just didn’t notice.
