A lot of books are aimed at a specific market, i.e. ebook or traditional Waterstones etc. I recently got a publishing deal. The target was 60K when we were going the Amazon route. Now that we think we might be able to get it into bookstores, I've been asked to submit 80K to 90K.

60K words is fine for an ebook as these tend to be shorter for Kindle reading. You need more than that for a print version as it has to look substantial on the shelf at the bookstore. That seems to be current thinking in the publishing world.

Agents, any thoughts on this? Would love to know. I know there are all kinds of commercial restrictions but don’t stories just take as many words as they take? Is less than 70k words an automatic no?
