Have been giving this one a long think today.
There are many, many epic medieval figures. But if I have to pick JUST ONE, I have to go with the man who went from nearly starving to death as a poor knight to nearly toppling the Eastern Roman Empire as Duke.

UFC fans are a weird breed of people.
How can you as a “spectator” sit safely on the sidelines and allow yourself the liberty of ridiculing fighters who would fold you like a lawn chair. This is fascinating to me. There’s something about the human psyche that’s being revealed here that someone with better prose could articulate.
So much confidence, so little risk. Little men casting big shadows. And they show this to the world proudly. It’s even more pronounced in fighting sports for some reason, appeals to a very primal instinct in man. Makes these spectators indulge in the feeling of combat while remaining completely removed from its reality. Living vicariously through your favorite gladiator.

If you know the answer to this riddle without looking anything up, you know your medieval Roman history in general and the biography of the last Roman Emperor who truly deserves the title Great in particular.

The issue of Mars colonisation (or space colonisation in general, if we don't want to get into the planet/habitat debate between space advocates) is surprisingly one of the key dividing lines in present day politics. You can reliably predict someones opinion on it by which party they vote for, by how they feel about Elon Musk as a person, or by their level of optimism/pessimism about technology. There is almost total correlation on believing it is a good/bad idea from a technical perspective and thinking it is desirable/undesirable from a political perspective. Everyone seems to be quite sure that the laws of physics vindicate their opinions on this matter. Its not surprise I'm in the "let's go" faction. But I am increasingly of the view that even beyond the issue of Mars, that faction must win, or else Earth as well will be sunk into the mire of degrowth, envy politics, and misery.
