Pupils rely heavily on the pre-frontal cortex for impulse control, thinking & cooperation which is still very underdeveloped.Under stress & in survival mode listening can be difficult, not because they are refusing, because their nervous system cannot access the skills required.🧠🌱

Arrested emotional development. A young person from trauma related backgrounds, neglect, etc, impairs their ability to fully develop emotionally. They may look like a 12 year old but have the neuropsychological infrastructure, social and emotional skills of a 5 year old.🧠🌱

Neuroscience shows us that when pupils are emotionally overwhelmed their brain shifts into survival mode. The cortex, part of the brain responsible for impulse control & emotional regulation reduces activity. When we help them feel safe, then the cognitive work can begin.🧠🌱

That’s a wrap for school days in 2025. Last day cooked a Christmas roast for 30 of my young people alongside secret Santa. Each student also got a book from us also. I am officially exhausted. Now time to chill, drink gin and be merry. 🎄🧑‍🎄

There are some students that Christmas is very tough as they see all the 'perfect advert Christmas' and won't have enough to eat or anything to celebrate with even if they wanted to. Because it is so Christmassy in schools, with everyone tired, sometimes these students get lost and are unnoticed. All it takes is a quiet moment and a check-in to make a difference.

One last push going into the final week. Also a reminder that not all pupils look forward to Christmas. The ones where home doesn't feel a safe place. These behaviours may manifest in being suddenly more quiet & withdrawn. Hovering about after school.🧠🌱

How it was. A young person struggling to navigate the school environment. How it is now. The result of trauma responsive work.Mitigating a young persons stress. Regulation. Making sense of their world. Emotional availability. Inner work. Hero's of their own story🧠🌱

A reminder that many of our young people come to our schools with a low, emotionally developmental age rather than their chronological age due to chaos and adversity. Under stress, emotionally challenged young people will behave in a way that reflect their emotional age.🧠🌱
