These teen takeovers are violent, dangerous, and illegal. It is going to stop. We are looking beyond those individuals who are committing the crimes and we are looking at the parents to make sure that they understand that they are responsible for the upheaval that is going on in the District.

Massive brawl broke out Friday night at a Chipotle in the Navy Yard area.

At the same time that the war against Iran is ongoing and must be stopped, DC itself is under military occupation by National Guard since August 2025 and Trump has stated they will not leave until 2029. They have created a "safe and beautiful taskforce" with all the Federal law enforcement agencies that is terrorizing local Black communities. Where local police should be responding to the needs of the community, these Federal agents have subjected the people to abuse and violence, including the recent killing of Julian Bailey by US Marshalls. This state of siege is made possible because DC has been denied statehood and the rightful authority to govern its own affairs, we must change this- FREE DC! I had some great conversations with two amazing local community members here in DC, NeeNee @neeneetay and Melani @MelaniNDouglass , that have caused me to reflect on my work here and the ways that I can be of service in strengthening the connections between this struggle and the concerns and struggles facing the local communities in Washington DC. My efforts here have had impacts on the local community and its people, and it is my desire not to harm but to work in communication, to lift up and to contribute what strength I can to the ongoing struggle for rights and freedom which this community has been engaged in for years. I will be engaging continuously on these issues going forward and encourage others like myself who have not yet done so to work to connect to and advance their struggles in common along with the communities in which they are taking place.

At a recent candidate debate, we had an important conversation about traffic safety and fairness in DC. Let me be clear: we’re not going to ticket our way to Vision Zero. Too many residents feel like the current traffic camera system is predatory and prioritizes revenue over safety. That must change. As I’ve said, cameras should exist to save lives, not to place a financial burden on working families. My plan is straightforward: redesign dangerous roads, align street design with safe driving speeds, and focus enforcement where it actually prevents crashes. We will establish an Office on Vision Zero, fix inequities in camera placement, reinvest revenue back into safer streets, and hold drivers accountable—no matter where they’re from. This is about results, not rhetoric. Safe streets. Fair systems. Real accountability—for every ward.
