@fugitiveink Oh Lord…. My cat Freddie had one of those. It burst in my brother’s bedroom. The room looked like the field hospital at Scutari, as a result. Poor Toby! And him becoming such a handsome fella too!

Toby the tomcat update: Toby had to go to the vet last week, as he had what seems to have been a burst abscess on his cheek — possibly the relic of a long-ago fight. (Classic tomcat issue, apparently.) He is now on antibiotics and doing very well. He also looks much more relaxed, if still quite scruffy. He's booked in to be neutered and microchipped on Monday 11 May.

Just a quick update on this grumpy-looking stray tomcat. He's now been to the vet. As expected, he's an entire tom, perhaps five years old, with no microchip. He has ticks, fleas and possibly worms, but is otherwise in decent shape. If no one comes forward to claim him in the next week, we can move forward with neutering him. His name is Toby the Tabby.

Went to a lovely book launch last night in Chelsea at the most charming bookshop ever for Thoughtlands by @JCollissHarvey and I saw my writing teacher, Sara Bailey from a class 22 years ago too

@robertashton1 Writing a book (if you are one of those poor damned souls, a writer) is a wonderful thing. But even better is to see it find a place in the world beyond your desk!

Lovely afternoon in Guildford in the sunshine. Treated self to this GORGEOUS but pricey huge notebook for journalling but got £10 off with my Waterstones points 💪. Has taken a while to find one worthy of replacing my one from Paperchase, almost finished... so found just in time

Good morning, little Spoon. Some of your online admirers, of whom you are possibly unaware, wonder about the progress of your immunotherapy, intended to sort out your dust mite allergy. Happily, two months on, it seems to be a success, with much less over-grooming. Thrive, much-loved little Spoon!

@fugitiveink That was my thinking too - I wanted something in keeping with the character of the book - a bit personal, a little quirky, as human as I could make it.

@JCollissHarvey The great thing about drawing architectural details is that one has to really look at them, engage with how they actually work — and also, at the moment, with so much AI slop about, I increasingly cherish something that looks deeply felt and also very human. So, yes, wonderful.

Books were better when they regularly had whimsical little images like this marking, in effect, section breaks. (This beauty is from a 1725 volume making various rather technical proposals for better drainage and river navigation for the Great Ouse.)
