Sir Richard Knighton admits the United Kingdom is preparing a major plan to ready the whole country for a major global war. Everybody, from the military and police to hospitals and industry, has to be ready for the transition to war.

@BenedictSpence Point is that many "boomers" were born into relative poverty, went to shit state schools and lived in poor council housing but somehow millions of us battled the system hard to forge a successful career and accumulate a degree of wealth, overcoming obstacles along the way.

@CrimeLdn Fair to say the "problem" has gone beyond a critical mass and the time has come to accept we don't have the political will to address and overcome by force any domestic or international enemy

My Talking Politics podcast conversation with Keir Starmer ( open.spotify.com/episode/7eaY2O… ) ranged from his critical reaction to Trump’s inflammatory Truth Social posts all the way through to reshaping defence for this new age of drone wars and his zeal to forge new closer relationships with the EU and other European countries. For what it’s worth, I found him more animated and engaged than I have seen him for some time. If you think he has a future after what are expected to be disastrous local and national elections for Labour in May - and diminishing numbers of his MPs are plotting to defenestrate him - you should listen to it. Two of his remarks stood out, for me. First was his belief that Trump’s Iran war will define his time in office, as much as the 2007/8 global financial crisis did for Gordon Brown and Covid did for Boris Johnson. Starmer pledged that - unlike his predecessors - he would not waste this crisis and would use it to push through fundamental reforms, whose main aim would be to lift up the living standards of those left behind over the past 20 years. Listen to the podcast to decide whether his ambitious rhetoric is underpinned by credible plans. I fear he does not yet fully recognise the inevitable trade offs between growth and equity, in a winner-takes-all AI world. But he is certainly on a journey, as they say. Second, and more trivially, he revealed that he is part of assorted WhatsApp groups with world leaders, for a variety of shared projects. The greatest proponent of the WhatsApping culture in his peer group is Finland’s president, Alex Stubb. But he Starmer hates WhatsApping. It is not his thing, at all, he says. Which, quite possibly, may not be the most surprising of his confessions today.

@JohnHealey_MP I know it's drastic and disproportionate, but I think the time has come for Yvette Cooper to send Putin a strongly worded letter. It's the only solution.

I’m proud of our UK Armed Forces, who left these Russian vessels with no doubt. Their movements were not covert as Putin planned. Their attempted secret operations were exposed. And they have now retreated.
Ministry of Defence 🇬🇧@DefenceHQ

This satellite image is of Russian naval base Olenya in the High North, along with their spy ship Yantar and specialist GUGI submarines before they departed port for UK waters. These vessels are designed to survey underwater critical infrastructure during peacetime, then sabotage in conflict. In response to nefarious activity by Russian GUGI submarines and an Akula Class submarine, the Defence Secretary @JohnHealey_MP deployed our Armed Forces to track and deter any malign activity by these vessels. We worked in partnership with Norway and other allies responding to increased Russian activity in the Atlantic, north of the UK. A @RoyalNavy warship and @RoyalAirForce P-8 aircraft ensured the Russian submarines were monitored 24/7. The Akula Submarine subsequently retreated home having been closely tracked throughout and we continued to monitor the two GUGI submarines, in and around wider UK waters. Our Armed Forces left them with no doubt that they were being monitored, that their movements were not covert as Putin planned and that their attempted secret operations had been exposed.

Possibly the most boring interview of all time. Soft ball questions, hopeless stances and downright toadyism, fucking useless…
ITV News@itvnews

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has told ITV News' Talking Politics podcast that he is "fed up" with families in the UK seeing their bills go up and down "because of the actions of Putin or Trump". The exclusive interview with ITV News' Political Editor @Peston is the prime minister's first since the establishment of a fragile two-week ceasefire deal made between the US and Iran. itv.com/news/2026-04-0…

@miriam_cates Think you need to pick a different religion to follow with different values if you think discriminating against people drawing a pension after working for 40 odd years, contributing to "the system" is the right thing to do.

Almost two-thirds of voters want Sir Keir Starmer to resign immediately, and a similar number want a general election now, a poll has found. “The majority of voters in every region and age group want the Prime Minister to be replaced. Asked “should Keir Starmer stay or go?”, 64 per cent of people said he should go and 18 per cent said he should stay. Of those who voted Labour in 2024, 46 per cent said they wanted him to go now. The usual loyalty we see in British politics has become unbuckled as far as Labour is concerned, and that places the Prime Minister in a very perilous position indeed.” Telegraph. Even the Labour Party had their doubts about Starmer but I suspect they didn’t think he would be this bad. Tick tock.

With an average clutch of 10 eggs, the parents must find up to 20,000 caterpillars in just three weeks to successfully raise their brood.

Nesting Blue Tits produce famously large clutches and have been known to lay up to 16 eggs! However, they will only lay one clutch per year, synchronized with the emergence of caterpillars.
