The liquor industry funded campaigns against women's suffrage. They knew women would vote for prohibition. When the wets opposed giving women the vote, they showed exactly whose side they were on.

13 states had statewide prohibition laws in the 1850s. The movement was legal, democratic, and winning before the Civil War interrupted everything. This was always a mainstream American value.

Benjamin Rush didn't just call drinking a disease in the abstract. He traced it through the body, documented the symptoms, mapped the progression. This was science in 1784. The drys were on the right side of medicine.

Dry counties and municipalities still exist across America today, by democratic choice. Communities that have voted to stay dry generation after generation. The desire for sobriety doesn't die when the federal mandate ends.

@ProhibitionUS Generally, federal, state, and local government end up spending much more money dealing with the problems caused by the alcohol industry, than it gets from taxing it. The alcohol industry just makes societies sicker, poorer, and more highly taxed.

Before Prohibition, 14% of all federal, state, and local tax revenue came from alcohol. And yet the country was still drowning in alcoholism, poverty, and saloon-driven political corruption. The tax revenue wasn't worth the cost.

The Prohibition Party was founded in 1869. It brought temperance into national electoral politics for the first time. It laid the groundwork for everything that followed over the next 50 years.

Kansas became the first state to ban alcohol in its constitution in 1881. Kansas didn't collapse. It grew. The dry counties of this country have always been more stable than the wet ones.

@FischerKing64 The negatives have far outweighed the positives. Addiction, domestic violence, car accidents… There are much better social lubricants, and if one claims to need alcohol it is pure cope.

Alcohol is the best, most tested social lubricant. It has resulted in a lot of friendships and relationships and sexual encounters that resulted in sound marriages. Binge drinking is bad. But ‘alcohol is poison’ misses that alcohol solves loneliness - which is a bigger problem.

Bihar, India enacted Prohibition. Murders and gang robberies dropped 20%. Riots fell 13%. Fatal traffic accidents down 10%. The experiment works wherever it's tried.
