#MedievalMonday What comes to mind when you think of the #WarsoftheRoses? Battlefields, court intrigues, inheritance disputes? Likely not violent street brawls between merchants & lawyers, but this was exactly what happened in London OTD in 1459. The Annals of London record a brawl ‘between the students of the Inns of court & the inhabitants of Fleet Street’ which caused the deaths of the Queen's attorney & at least 7 other men. As a consequence of which ‘the principals of Furnival's, Clifford's, & Barnard’s Inns were committed prisoners to Hertford Castle, & Alderman Taylor & others were committed to the Castle of Windsor.’ The violence had arisen as a direct result of a growing authority vacuum in the capital, with #HenryVI & his Queen Margaret of Anjou choosing to spend much of their time in Coventry & Henry’s cousin & dynastic rival, Richard, 3rd Duke of York often away on his own estates. The factionalism of the past decade (which had erupted into open conflict between the Lancastrians & Yorkists at the First Battle of St Albans in 1455) had also now become firmly embedded & was spreading to groups further down the social scale despite Henry’s attempts to end the divisions through his 1458 Loveday parade.

@Music_Goddesss Thank you for the informative exposition! I love this piece. To me, it has always sounded like the musical summation of life. It begins calmly with only minor issues as children, then gets complicated, then we are hopefully eased into old age.
